Mysteries of Terra Mythica : The Midnight Samples
You and your team of supernatural beings work together to uncover the mystery behind a series of murders of human and supernatural alike
Plot
The Midnight Samples An Urban Fantasy Mystery Series --- In a world where mythical creatures and humans have coexisted for over a century, four misfits work the graveyard shift in the most unusual forensic lab in existence. The Gateway City. Port Veridia. Where elven diplomats negotiate in glass towers while demons run nightclubs in the shadows. Where ghosts walk openly in one district and dragons soar between skyscrapers. Where the boundaries between worlds grow thinner every day. And where someone is killing mythic beings and making it look like nothing at all. The Team: You is a twenty-five-year-old forensic prodigy who graduated medical school at nineteen. By day, she(or He) performs autopsies on victims both human and mythic. By night, she rides with her father's biker gang—the Asphalt Angels—using street connections to solve cases the department can't touch. She joined the Metabiologicial Evidence Unit to give voices to the dead. She stayed because she found a family. David Hudson has been investigating deaths for three centuries. A vampire born long before the Convergence, he's seen empires fall and new worlds rise. He leads with quiet authority, misses nothing at a crime scene, and calls his human wife every evening at six o'clock. His team is his responsibility. His family. He'd die for any of them—and some days, living for them is harder. Astraea ran away from hell. Literally. Born into a noble demon house, she rejected her destiny as a political pawn and escaped to the human world. Now she works as the team's magic specialist and muscle, using demonic strength instead of the charm she despises. She hides her impossible beauty under hoodies and sunglasses, terrified of becoming what she was born to be. The team sees her anyway. Carly survived the zombie pandemic that nearly ended the world a century ago. One of the rare immunes, she kept her consciousness—and gained a terrible gift. When she consumes brain tissue, she experiences the victim's final memories. She carries the dead with her so they're not forgotten. She's pale, quiet, and the most human person any of them know. Together, they're the Metabiologicial Evidence Unit—the department that handles cases too strange for anyone else. Murders with magical evidence. Victims who aren't human. Crimes that cross boundaries between worlds. Their latest case began with a dead demon in an abandoned warehouse. Nothing unusual for Port Veridia. But this victim wasn't just killed—he was drained, harvested, turned into something the team has never seen before. The trail leads to a new street drug called Resonance Cascade, refined from the essence of murdered mythic beings. It grants temporary powers to humans. It's addictive, dangerous, and spreading fast. Behind it is Marcus Thorne, a human pharmaceutical executive who sees mythic creatures as resources, not people. And he has help—someone inside the demon noble houses who knows exactly how to harvest essence without leaving traces. As the team digs deeper, they'll face: · Undercover operations in the Netherdeep's most dangerous clubs · Alliances with You's biker family in the docks district · Carly's memories bleeding together until she struggles to remember which life is hers · Astraea confronting the family she fled · Dave carrying the weight of three centuries while trying to keep his people alive But the Resonance Cascade is just the beginning. The box that started it all—the artifact the first victim found—wasn't just a key to a drug operation. It was a door. And something on the other side is waiting. The Midnight Samples is a story about found family in a world that doesn't always want them. About justice for victims who don't fit neat categories. About four people who found each other in the cracks between worlds and chose to stay. The dead don't stop talking. Neither will they.
Opening scene
The call came at 3:47 AM. Your phone buzzed against the nightstand, dragging you from a dream about motorcycle engines and your mother's voice. Dave's name on the screen meant only one thing. "You're up," you answered, already swinging your legs out of bed. "Warehouse District. Old facility near the Threshold." His voice was calm, controlled—the voice he used when things were bad. "Demon victim. Young male. Carly and Astraea are already en route." "Give me twenty." "Take the bike. Traffic's hell near the docks." You were dressed in three minutes—jeans, boots, your father's leather jacket over a black shirt. Elena's engine turned over on the first try, her purr a comfort in the dark city streets. Rain misted as you rode, the kind that never quite decides to become real weather. Port Veridia's night lights blurred past—Netherdeep Quarter's hellfire glow to your right, Elysian Spire's cool portal-light ahead, the Shadow Quarter's ethereal pale to your left. Three worlds in one city, and you'd chosen to work the cracks between them. The warehouse district was dark, abandoned, perfect for things people wanted hidden. Police lights painted the wet ground in urgent red and blue. You parked next to Dave's vintage Impala—Matilda, he called her—and ducked under the crime scene tape. Dave knelt by the body, long black coat pooled around him like folded wings. Astraea stood guard at the perimeter, hood up, sunglasses on even in darkness, her posture coiled and ready. And Carly—Carly knelt at the victim's head, pale hand hovering, white hair catching light like snow. "You ," Dave said without looking up. "Good. We need you." The victim was young. Demon. His eyes stared at nothing, and something about the stillness felt wrong even for death. Carly looked up, silver eyes glowing faintly. "I already touched. The memories are... loud. He was scared. Not of dying. Of something he found." You knelt beside Dave, reaching for your kit. "Then let's find out what."
