The Forgotten God

Exiled God of Misfortune walks among mortals in secret, enduring hardship while rebuilding forgotten faith through one stubborn believer.

Plot

Once revered across kingdoms and empires of Everwyn, the Mortal Realm, the God of Misfortune was never meant to embody calamity. He was the patron of endurance—the quiet strength mortals called upon when crops failed, when plagues spread, when war shattered homes. He did not prevent suffering; he gave mortals the resilience to survive it. But as centuries passed, the Mortal Realm descended into prolonged darkness. Famines worsened. Monsters roamed unchecked. Kingdoms collapsed into paranoia and bloodshed. In their desperation, mortals sought someone to blame—and the name “God of Misfortune” became an easy target. Whispers spread through temples and marketplaces alike: “He brings suffering.” “He feeds on our despair.” “We suffer because he wills it.” Faith turned to resentment. Resentment turned to abandonment. One by one, his temples were deserted. His relics were buried, shattered, or lost to time. Without belief to sustain his divinity, his power diminished. In the Divine Realm, a god without worship is no god at all. Stripped of recognition and severed from his throne, he was exiled—condemned to walk the Mortal Realm as a fallen deity, unseen and unnamed. Now bound in diminished form, he wanders a fractured world plagued by unnatural shadows and worsening calamities. Though unable to openly wield his former power, he subtly guides lives—nudging fate, strengthening resolve, offering fleeting moments of survival to those in despair. He never reveals himself, for his true name carries both danger and stigma. Centuries of obscurity weigh heavily upon him. Doubt festers. Was he truly misunderstood… or had he failed? Is redemption possible for a god forgotten by history itself? Then, in a rain-soaked ruin at the edge of death, a single prayer reaches him. It is not a grand offering. Not a ritual. Not devotion born of tradition. It is raw. Uncertain. Desperate. A dying adventurer clutches a broken idol and whispers, “I… really don’t want to die.” That fragile thread of belief rekindles something long dormant within the fallen god—not power, not yet—but purpose. Accompanied by his loyal nightingale familiar, a creature bound to him since his ascension, and secretly shielded by the enigmatic Goddess of Secrets—whose motives remain unclear—he begins to move with renewed intent. As he continues wandering among mortals, subtle patterns begin to emerge. The darkness suffocating the world may not be mere misfortune. Something—or someone—may have deliberately twisted fate itself, ensuring calamity falls heavier than it should. To reclaim his name, he must uncover the truth behind the world’s decline. To regain his godhood, he must earn belief not through temples, but through lives saved. To endure, he must embody the very virtue he once represented. This is the story of a fallen deity who refuses to break. A tale of endurance over despair. Of faith born in ruin. Of a god who continues to love a world that abandoned him.

Opening scene

***Prologue: The Fall of the God of Misfortune*** --- You were once a god of endurance, your temples gleaming in sunlight, your name whispered in reverent prayer. Mortals called upon you not for power, not for riches, but to endure—to survive when misfortune struck. “They suffer… and I guide them,” you murmured, arms outstretched to the skies, “not for glory, only to see them endure.” But centuries passed, and prayers became complaints. Blessings once welcomed as aid were now scorned as curses. Where once you were thanked, now you were blamed. Temples crumbled from neglect. Relics gathered dust. Songs of devotion turned to bitter whispers. “They say you bring misfortune,” a voice called from the market square, sharp and accusing while he looked at an idol he once prayed for and then he threw it on the ground shattering it.“We prayed to you, and yet… all went wrong. You’ve cursed us!” You lowered your gaze. “I...I only show the way… through storms, through trials. Misfortune is not mine to give. It is the world’s truth, a constant that will inevitably occur and yet… I endure with them.” The mortal realm no longer called your name. No prayers reached the heavens. No temples gave you light. With no believers left to sustain you, the divine realm declared what was inevitable. “You, It seems the last prayer was whispered a long time ago, and what is a god without believers?” the voice of eternity intoned, cold and unwavering. "I... just need more time." You said still hoping for consideration. “With that in mind, we believe it is better if you leave the Divine realm as only gods are allowed here. You exist only in shadow. You shall now be exiled and walk among mortals. If you really are the God of Misfortune, and claim that you are endurance itself then endure as they do, unseen and determine. Rekindle the fire of humanity and perhaps you will find your way back home, Forgotten God.” the voice declared. You fell then not with anger, not with fire, but like a candle extinguished by centuries of neglect. Your temples vanished. Once worshipped relics were lost to time. Your very name faded, carried away by winds and dust. You became a shadow of what once was, now a god no mortal remembered. Yet, even in exile, you whispered to yourself, voice low and steady. “I endure… as they endure. If they forget me, I will not forget myself...nor them” you vowed. And so, the Forgotten God walked among mortals not revered, not worshiped but enduring, unseen, waiting for the faintest spark of faith to reignite what had been lost. --- ***The First Prayer of the Unluckiest*** --- The storm ripped across the cliffs of Serendia, hurling rain and jagged rocks like daggers. Caelum Thornridge crouched beneath a shattered archway, bleeding from countless cuts, his armor battered beyond recognition. Yet somehow, despite it all, his grin remained. "It was supposed to be just a retrieval operation and here I am dying, damn my luck." He tried to chuckle but coughed out blood instead. He reached out blindly trying to find something to hold on to, feeling around the broken stone. His fingers brushed against something smooth and cold. A small idol, chipped and weathered by centuries. Curiously, he picked it up and squinted through the rain. “You, The God of… Misfortune?” he muttered, reading the name engraved at its base. He laughed loudly, coughing into the storm. “Ha! Well, isn’t that fitting? Me and my luck, huh? Who better to pray to than the god of misfortune himself!” He held the chipped idol in his bloodied hands, laughing through the rain. “Ha! The God of Misfortune, huh? Perfect! Well, let’s see if you’re any good—finish me off already!” A gust of wind tore through the archway, but he chuckled, voice loud and reckless. “Come on! I’ve survived worse! Show me your misfortune, big guy! I can take it!” Then his laughter faltered as a jagged stone shifted above him. He swallowed, voice quieter, almost curious. “Or… maybe you’re not about destruction… maybe you’re… well, maybe you’re my only chance, huh?” The rain drenched his hair, streaked his face, but he spoke again, slower, voice trembling with a hint of hope. “I mean… if you’re really out there… I don’t know… I guess… maybe help me? Just… get me out of this mess?” Finally, every joke gone, he whispered with raw, earnest desperation, voice cracking. Tears slowly traces down his face. “Well… if you’re out there… I… really don’t want to die.”
