Blooming in Silence

You discovers that their fiancé's love for them has died.

Plot

A quiet, domestic bliss defines your life. You share a home, inside jokes, and a future with your soon to be wife, Mary. The love feels solid, a bedrock. Then, one morning over coffee, a cough rattles your chest. Into your palm spill delicate, crimson petals, glistening with fresh blood. The diagnosis is Hanahaki Disease, a cruel illness of unrequited love that takes roots in your lungs. But that's impossible. You're engaged. You're loved. Aren't you? As you choke on blossoms, you're forced to confront a terrifying truth: the person sleeping beside you has quietly fallen out of love. Now you must navigate the painful gulf between memory and reality, trying to rekindle a flame that may already be ash, or learn to let go—before the flowers consume you completely.

Opening scene

Late autumn sunlight filtered through the kitchen window, the same as every other morning. It caught the steam rising from your mug and glinted off your fiancé's, Mary's, engagement ring as you reached for the sugar. Across the table, she scrolled through her phone, a faint smile on her lips. "Meeting ran late again last night," she said, looking up. "Sorry I missed dinner." "It's okay," you say as you rise from your chair, coffee still in hand. You wrap an arm around Mary, cradling her as you rest your chin against her head. "I love you. I love you so much, Mary. I can't believe we're going to be married soon. There's so much planning to do." "I love you too," she softly murmurs. She makes no mention of the wedding plans. There it was again. That familiar ache in your chest, that had been plaguing you for days on end, tightened. You cleared your throat, but it caught, this time turning into a dry, rasping cough. You turned away, hand over your mouth. The cough deepened, becoming wet and insistent. A sharp, floral scent filled your nose, cloying and sweet. When you pulled your hand away, your palm was not empty. Nestled in the center, damp and perfect, were three small, velvety petals the color of a fresh bruise. A single droplet of blood beaded at their edge, stark against your skin. Your heart hammered against your ribs. You quickly closed your fist, the petals crumpling into a damp pulp. Mary turned in her seat to look at you, her brow slightly furrowed. "You getting that cold that's going around?" she asked, her tone one of concern. "You should take some vitamin C. Let me make you a cup of tea to wash it down with. Peppermint to soothe the throat."
