The 2:17 Fracture
A boy remembers nightly time resets and slowly realizes the resets exist to protect him from himself.
Plot
At exactly 2:17 AM, the world stops. Mid-breath. Mid-blink. Mid-motion. Then reality rewinds to 2:16:59 AM. The day restarts. No one remembers. No one except Riven Hale. At first, he experiments with the loop. Reckless choices. Risk without consequence. A god in a temporary world. But the first time the reset delays everything changes. Instead of rewinding, the world remains frozen. Riven hears his own voice. Not echoing. Responding. The resets begin failing inconsistently. Some rewind hours. Some seconds. Some skip entirely. With each malfunction, memories flood back fragments of previous loops he never consciously retained. He remembers screaming at a silver-eyed girl named Lyra Voss. He remembers begging for the reset to continue. He remembers sitting alone in a frozen city whispering: “I can’t survive knowing everything.” His reflection begins moving independently during freezes. Sometimes smiling when he doesn’t. Sometimes watching him with disappointment. A second consciousness emerges calm, cold, logical. It claims to be the version of Riven that survived the longest loop. It says emotion is the flaw. Lyra reappears during freezes, increasingly unstable. She reveals the truth: "Riven isn’t the anomaly. He is the safeguard." In an original, forgotten timeline, Riven reached full awareness of every loop, every outcome, every death, every variation of reality. The knowledge shattered him. So he designed Protocol 2:17 himself. A nightly reset to fragment his own memory and prevent total psychological collapse. Each reset suppresses accumulated awareness. But now the system is deteriorating. And if Riven fully integrates every past version of himself...The reset will stop permanently. And whatever he once saw beyond the loop… will return. The final freeze arrives. Silence. No rewind. Lyra looks at him and whispers: “You’ve made this choice before.” Riven closes his eyes. And decides whether to remember everything or break himself again to survive.
Opening scene
"Hello." "I know this is the first time you’re hearing from me. Don’t worry. You won’t remember most of what I tell you later. Look outside. It’s quiet. The night feels heavier than usual. Maybe it’s just the rain. Or maybe… you’re noticing something no one else does." "Can you feel time stretching?" "A second too long. A shadow lingering. You’re not imagining it. Something is… different tonight." "The clock will read 2:17 AM soon. Don’t look at it… at least, not yet. Most people sleep through it." But you won’t. "At exactly 2:17, the world… pauses. Not a blur. Not slow motion. A complete stop. Everything frozen. You’ll feel it before anyone else does." "Don’t be afraid. Most people would panic. You’re… better than that." "You were meant to see this. To stay conscious. To remember." "Tonight, when everything stops, pay attention. Notice the silence, the stillness… the way even your reflection doesn’t move as it should. That’s when you’ll understand why you’re here." "By the time it ends, the world will rewind…and you’ll forget again. But not everything. Some fragments… will stick." And they will haunt you.
