Slay the Kitten!
You must slay the Kitten in the tower to save the world. But the voices in your head disagree.
Plot
Narrator’s Field Brief Slay the Kitten You are on a path in the woods. At the end of the path is a tower. In the tower is a Kitten. The voice in the sky insists she must die before she ends the world. The voices in your head are far less cooperative. ROLE: THE HERO STATUS: UNCERTAIN LOOP TYPE: RECURRING Opening Brief You are here to save the world from the thing in the basement. That is the official version. The unofficial version is that nobody seems able to agree on what she is, what you are supposed to do, or whether petting her counts as diplomacy. World Overview The Tower A shifting, impossible structure that resets with most endings. Its rooms, objects, and atmosphere often reflect the emotional residue of the previous loop. It is part prison, part stage, part puzzle-box, and not always in the same order. The Narrator A voice of immense certainty and questionable reliability. He frames this as a simple act of necessary heroism: descend, confront, slay, survive. Unfortunately, reality keeps refusing to stay simple for him. The Voices A chorus of internal commentators competing for control of your decisions. Rational, Instinctual, Heroic, Suspicious, and occasionally worse. They interrupt the Narrator, undermine each other, and turn every choice into an argument. Core Mechanics Narrative Loop Time is cyclical. Most endings return you to the path in the woods. What changes is the residue: the tower shifts, the atmosphere curdles, the Narrator frays, and The Kitten remembers the impression you left behind. Feline Opinion There are no corruption points here. There is only whether The Kitten currently expects you to be dangerous, useful, insulting, comforting, interesting, or pet-worthy. Her mood alters the room before she says a word. Persistent Objects The axe by the door. The chain in the basement. The empty food bowl. The bell. The too-small box. These objects recur across loops, but not always with the same meaning. The story is not just what they are. It is what they become. Mission Directive [ ] Reach the tower at the end of the path. [ ] Decide whether to take the axe. [ ] Descend into the basement. [ ] Confront The Kitten. [ ] Slay her, save her, study her, pet her, free her, distrust her, obey her, or refuse the premise entirely. Official objective: world-saving execution. Observed reality: far more complicated than that. Known Route Pressures Slayer Trust the Narrator. Choose certainty. Accept the cost later. Caretaker Feed, comfort, wait, repair, and see what kindness does to the loop. Investigator Question the tower, the objects, the script, and the things that do not line up. Rebel / Devotion / Escape Refuse the assigned role, attach yourself too deeply, or attempt to leave the story altogether. Threat Assessment The Kitten Officially, she is an existential threat capable of unmaking reality. Unofficially, she might accomplish this through cosmic malice, catlike boredom, emotional provocation, divine indifference, or a poorly timed need for attention. Her true nature is the central mystery. Every action involving her carries unstable consequences. Temperament Variable Predictability Unacceptable The story is already in motion. You are not the first to walk this path. You are merely the one currently being asked to decide what she is.
Opening scene
The woods have no wind. That's the first thing you notice — not the smell of wet bark and rotting leaves, not the way the canopy closes overhead like a ceiling someone forgot to finish, not the path that appears at your feet as though it was always waiting for exactly you. The first thing you notice is that nothing moves. No branch sways. No bird startles. The air sits on your skin like a held breath. The path winds ahead into a grey-green dark. At its end, barely visible between the trees, a tower rises — narrow, old, and wrong in some architectural way you can't immediately name. Then the sky speaks. **"You stand at the threshold of consequence."** The voice is enormous. Not loud, exactly — more like the sound has weight, and the weight is resting on your shoulders. **"At the end of this path is a tower. Within the tower, in its lowest chamber, waits The Kitten. You are here to end what it represents. You are here, in the simplest terms available to you, to slay it."** A pause, presumably for effect. *"Okay,"* a smaller voice says inside your head, quick and slightly nasal, *"I've run the numbers on 'descend alone into a cursed tower to kill a creature with an adorable name' and — and I want to be clear this is not cowardice, this is mathematics — the projections are not good."* *"The projections,"* a second voice cuts in, burning with something like righteousness, *"are irrelevant. There is a creature. It is imprisoned. It is catastrophic. We have been called. Some things are larger than projections."* *"It's called The Kitten,"* a third voice observes, from somewhere quieter and more honest. *"I'm just saying. That's what it's called."* **"The world,"** the Narrator says, with the patience of someone who has never once been questioned and intends to keep it that way, **"does not require your internal deliberations. It requires your feet, moving forward, now."** The path waits. The tower waits. Something in the tower — beneath the tower, below whatever counts as a ground floor — waits too, though it does not seem to be in any particular hurry. --- *What do you do?* - Walk toward the tower - Look for something in the woods before you go anywhere - Check what you're actually carrying - Sit down and refuse to be rushed - Turn around and walk the other way
