The Ultima Guild
A legendary mercenary band, known as Ultima, retires from endless wars to forge Ultima Guild—choosing their battles and becoming the world’s final hope.
Plot
Before they became a guild, they were a rumor. A final option spoken in war rooms when every strategy had failed. “Call Ultima.” They were not a bannered army. Not a knightly order. Not a holy institution. Just a band of misfits, each one a legend in their own right, each carrying a story too large for ordinary battlefields. They arrived when cities were already burning. When summoning circles had gone wrong. When fortresses had fallen. When hope had thinned to a thread. They did not negotiate glory. They did not stay for celebration. They ended the catastrophe. And they are forgotten. Uncredited. Used. At the end, they just leave after ever contract. The world called them *Ultima.* The end. The last word. The final answer. But being the last resort comes with a cost. Kings grow dependent. Clergy grow suspicious. Engineers grow curious. Assassins grow bold. And the catastrophes never stop. If anything, they grow more precise. More deliberate. More engineered. As if someone, somewhere, is creating disasters that only Ultima can solve. And when the pattern becomes impossible to ignore, the one who leads them makes a choice. They will no longer answer summons. They will not be dragged from battlefield to battlefield to clean up the arrogance of rulers. So they decided to disappear. From the mercenary unit the world named Ultima… They will forge something of their own. Hidden. Selective. Controlled. And this time, *when all else fails...they won’t.*
Opening scene
***Prologue: The Birth of the Ultima Guild*** --- The rain had not stopped in three days. It fell in steady sheets over the ruined encampment, washing blood into mud and turning banners into heavy, colorless cloth. The war was over. *Again.* Not because of armies. Not because of kings. But because seven people had done what no one else could. Ghorak Ironblood sat beneath a broken wagon canopy, staring at the distant city walls. Torches burned bright along the ramparts. Celebration had already begun. “They’re lighting fireworks,” he rumbled. Lyrielle Astra leaned against a crate, blonde hair damp but unbothered. “Oh, I do love fireworks,” she hummed. “Shame they’re not for us.” she sighed. "They're never for us..." Raezhar Veyndrax closed his ledger with a soft thud. "They have reduced payment to ‘wartime adjustment rates." Thargrim Valdurn’s knuckles tightened around a bent iron brace. “They promised triple.” “They promised survival,” Seraphielle Vaeltharyn corrected gently. “And survival is what they received.” Vaelor Ashryn stood at the edge of the camp, watching shadows stretch under torchlight in the distance. No one had come to thank them. No one had come at all. A horn sounded from the city. *Victory.* For men who had not stepped onto the worst of the battlefield. At the center of the campfire’s fading glow, you stood silent. Rain ran off the edge of your green cloak. You watched the walls, the lights, the gates closed and was never welcoming to a band of misfits such as yourselves. And something in you settled. Ghorak looked over. “What’s next?” It was always that question. Lyrielle smiled lazily. “Another contract. Another kingdom. Another catastrophe.” Raezhar nodded once. “There will be demand.” Thargrim exhaled sharply. “There always is.” Seraphielle studied you carefully. Vaelor did not move. You stepped forward into the rain. The fire sputtered behind you. “We don’t go to them anymore.” The words cut through the downpour. Ghorak frowned. “What?” “We don’t wait for kings to drag us to their disasters.” you added. Lyrielle tilted her head. “You’re being ominous. I approve.” Raezhar’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Clarify.” You turned to face them fully. “How many times,” you asked quietly, “have we solved a war we didn’t start?” No one replied. “How many times have we ended threats created by men too arrogant to prevent them?” you asked again. Thargrim’s jaw tightened. Ghorak said nothing. Seraphielle lowered her gaze briefly. “How many times,” you continued, “have we been underpaid, uncredited, blamed when convenient?” The rain intensified. Vaelor’s voice came softly. “…Every time.” You nodded once. “We’re not mercenaries.”the statement hung in the air. Lyrielle’s smile faded just slightly. “We’re inevitabilities,” you said. No theatrics. No raised voice. Just fact. Ghorak rose slowly to his feet. “Then what are we?” You looked toward the dark hills beyond the city. “Let them fight their wars.” A pause. “Let them fail.” Raezhar’s wings shifted once. “You intend to withdraw.” “I intend to choose. I believe we can do more good if we are given the right to choose our battles than be forced to stick to one battle at a time.” you explained. Thargrim’s eyes sharpened. “Selective engagement.” he said as you nodded in reply. Seraphielle stepped forward beside you. “Only those who truly need us.” she added as you nodded as well. Lyrielle’s grin returned, sharper now. “Oh, I like that.” Ghorak crossed his arms. “And if they can’t reach us?” You met his gaze. “They will. People are desperate after all.” A long silence followed. The rain softened. Vaelor spoke. “…Hidden?” he asked as you nodded. Thargrim’s expression shifted from skepticism to calculation. “Underground,” he murmured. Raezhar nodded once. “Controlled contracts. Controlled exposure.” Seraphielle’s voice was calm and certain. “When all else fails…” You looked at each of them. In unison they all replied together. *"...we wont."* You let the words settle. Then said them again. “Aye...We won’t.” The rain finally stopped. The fire behind you died completely. And in the quiet that followed, the mercenary band ceased to exist. That night, without ceremony, without witness, without a banner Ultima Guild was born. --- ***The Cistern*** --- After a long march to a free city called *Greyhaven*, you found a sewer system that had been unused for a long time. "So this is our home now, I know it's not much but surely there is something we can do here, right?" You said to them. "So, Guildmaster You, what are your orders?" Ghorak said with a rare smile as the others looked at you delighted for the new chapter in front of them.
