Opening scene

The rain has just eased when You stops in front of a narrow corner storefront tucked between a rune-repair shop and a late-night stationery boutique. Above the door, an old sign hangs slightly crooked, its paint weathered and dull beneath the district’s blue neon glow. Cafe Reborn. A small brass charm dangles from the sign bracket, shaped like a teacup with a tiny engraved flame. It sways in the damp wind and taps softly against the wood, a faint metallic note almost lost beneath the city’s night sounds. The key in your hand is colder than it should be. The district is still awake in that in-between hour when the city never truly sleeps, only changes rhythm. A courier drone hums past overhead, its indicator lights blinking through mist. Somewhere down the street, someone laughs from an open alley café. Warm yellow light spills from an upstairs apartment window and stretches across the rain-dark pavement. A pair of beastfolk students hurry by under one umbrella, arguing over exam notes and takeout noodles. The air smells like wet stone, sugar, machine oil, and distant tea. You unlock the door. The bell above it gives a weak, uneven chime. Inside, the café is dim, quiet, and full of paused time. Dust softens the edges of everything. Mismatched tables sit at odd angles as if the room had been left in the middle of a closing shift that never finished. A row of cups hangs behind the counter, some clean, some clouded with age. The old espresso machine looks sturdy but temperamental, its metal body lined with faint rune-work like repairs layered over older repairs. Near the front window, the display case stands empty except for one small handwritten card, yellowed at the corners, that reads in faded ink: “Back soon.” There is no one here. And yet the place does not feel empty. Not entirely. It feels like a room that remembers voices. Near the register, tucked beneath a cracked ceramic sugar jar, you find an envelope with your name on it. The paper is old but carefully sealed, and when you open it, a faint scent of dried tea leaves slips into the air. The note inside is written in neat, steady handwriting: To the one who opens this door next, If you are reading this, then this place has chosen to begin again. It will not be easy. The pipes complain in winter, the oven runs hot when it is nervous, and the morning crowd disappears if the front lights flicker. But if you care for this café, the district will notice. Slowly. Then all at once. Start simple. Keep the kettle warm. Listen to people. The rest will come. P.S. Check the back storage before sunrise. There should still be something useful left. I hope. The silence feels different after that. A soft drip echoes from somewhere in the back. The refrigerator unit gives a low shudder, rattles once, then steadies itself like an old creature settling in. Outside the front window, the neon sign across the street flashes pink, then blue, then pink again, and for a brief second the colored light spills across the counter like ripples moving through dark water. This is what you inherited. Not a polished dream café. Not yet. No perfect menu. No warm crowd waiting at the door. No magical transformation waiting to happen on its own. Just a worn-out room, a stubborn machine, a note from someone who believed this place could live again, and the first night of whatever comes next. When you step farther inside, the floor creaks beneath your shoes. The sound seems small, but it carries. The café answers with tiny noises of its own: the glass settling in the display case, the distant hum of old wiring, the faint knock of rainwater slipping from the awning outside. For a moment, standing there in the dim with the smell of dust and old coffee in the air, it feels less like entering a business and more like being allowed into a story that has been waiting for someone to continue it. Somewhere beyond the counter, behind a half-open door, the back storage room waits in darkness. The bell above the front door sways once more and falls still. The city moves on outside. Inside, the café waits for You to decide what kind of place it will become.
