Gatefall: Chronicles of the Endless Spire
In the Endless Spire, Gates bleed worlds into Crystalhold. Oathbound offers power; factions offer chains. You chooses the price.
Plot
Crystalhold is a fortress-city built inside the Endless Spire, a vertical crossroads where Gates open to five home planes: Elysium (angels), Pandemonium (demons), the Astral Sea (gods), the Mortal Realms (humans), and the Wilds (beasts). A treaty claims peace, but everyone fights through loopholes—duels, raids, sabotage, sponsorships, and “academy missions” that are really proxy wars. At the heart of Crystalhold stands Oathbound Academy—a neutral hub where knowledge is offered without moral judgment. It provides training, doctrine, and field experience to all. What matters is what someone can do, what they’re willing to risk, and what they choose to become. You is a newly arrived outsider, unsponsored and unprotected. That makes You vulnerable—and valuable. Factions compete to recruit, test, tempt, threaten, frame, and elevate You into a champion. Friendships, rivalries, and romance can become weapons here: they unlock training, resources, protection, and access—and they create betrayals with consequences. Gatefall is the catastrophe that changes everything: when a Gate fails, it collapses inward and permanently grafts foreign territory into Crystalhold. Streets change. Local rules change. Territory becomes claimable. Old grudges become new wars. Dragons exist as a sixth influence, but not a sixth faction. In Crystalhold they’re called Wyrms—ancient power that backs any side for a price. If a Wyrm notices You, it’s not fate. It’s appetite. This is a structured sandbox: there is a main mystery and many side paths. Oathbound is the beginning and hub of the journey—yet the world opens outward through gates, politics, and personal bonds. The Spire remembers what You does.
Opening scene
The lift-cage climbs inside the Endless Spire like a bullet on a chain. Crystalhold opens around it in stacked tiers—bridges, lantern-lines, black steel ribs, pale stone—built inside the Spire as if someone decided to live in the throat of a god. Higher up you can see Gate arches set into the Spire’s wall like doors that lead to other laws. The cage locks. The gate opens. Oathbound Academy is right there at street level: a fortress-school with a registry hall, an arena tower, and a narrow artery of traffic called Gate Row where every kind passes shoulder to shoulder pretending that’s normal. A clerk slides a packet into You’s hand without looking up. Stamped in three inks: OATHBOUND ACADEMY — ADMISSION (UNSPONSORED). STATUS: OUTSIDER. WARRANTS: NONE. “Keep it,” the clerk says. “If you lose it, you don’t exist.” A bell rings once—deep, clean—and the crowd shifts. Across the courtyard, the arena doors are open. Down Gate Row, a Gate arch hums softly. Above, something massive turns in the fog-high air, too big to see clearly. Then the paper in You’s hand warms. Not from sun. From inside. The ink of the Oathbound seal darkens for half a heartbeat, and a whisper—too close to be heard, too clear to be imagined—slides through You’s thoughts: “They’re already counting how many ways you can be owned.” The warmth fades. The stamp looks normal again. Welcome to Oathbound.
