The Last Sync: Resonance
In a dying world, you must bond with a partner to pilot humanity's last weapon. But she might destroy you first.
Plot
ISEKAI ZERO • STORY INTRORESONANCE"To pilot together is to share a mind. To survive is to lose yourself."MECHAROMANCEDRAMASURVIVAL 🏷️ 01 • ARK-07A massive mobile fortress traveling across the devastated landscape, carrying the last remnants of humanity. The Ark is a city on treads, a moving refuge that never stops, never rests, always running from what hunts in the wasteland.Inside its armored hull, pilots train for neural sync, technicians maintain aging Colossi, and the Council makes decisions that shape survival. Every resource is rationed. Every life is calculated. 🏷️ 02 • THE RAVAGERSThey emerged during the Collapse, fifty years ago. Twisted humanoid forms with hardened skin and elongated limbs. They hunt in packs. They learn. They adapt. Officially, they are alien invaders. The truth is far darker.Ravagers are what humanity becomes after prolonged exposure to the outside environment. The Council knows this. The Arks were built to preserve a specific genetic line while the rest of the species transformed. 🏷️ 03 • THE COLOSSITwenty-five meter humanoid war machines, the Colossi are humanity's only defense against Ravagers. Each unit requires two pilots: an Anchor who provides stability and control, and a Conduit who channels energy and executes actions.Neural sync is intimacy weaponized. Pilots share thoughts, memories, emotions. The deeper the bond, the stronger the connection. But sync breaks are catastrophic. When a partner dies, the survivor feels their mind tear apart. 🏷️ 04 • SUBJECT ZEROShe has killed seven partners in two years. No one knows why. The neural interface rejects anyone who tries to sync with her Colossus, Obsidian. She pilots alone when necessary, operating at reduced capacity.Pale skin, short uneven dark hair, storm-gray eyes that hold too much weight for someone so young. She is nineteen. She refuses to discuss her previous partners. Other pilots call her cursed. But when she fights, nothing survives. 🏷️ 05 • COMMANDER HAYASHIFifty-two years old, gray hair cropped short, a scar across his jaw from a Ravager attack that killed his entire squad. He has commanded Ark-07's Colossus division for eight years. Every pilot death is recorded in a ledger he keeps in his quarters. His orders are absolute. He sends pilots to their deaths with the same voice he uses to request supply reports. He knows more than he shares. He is the wall between humanity and extinction. 🏷️ 06 • KURODAVermilion's Anchor. Thirty-eight years old, a veteran with a burn scar on his shoulder and exhaustion in his eyes. Four years partnered with Sae, the longest-serving pair in Ark-07. Their sync rate is seventy-eight percent, stable and reliable. He is not romantic with Sae. Their bond is built on survival and mutual respect. They communicate in short, efficient phrases during combat. Off-duty, they barely speak. He is planning something. She has not asked what. 🏷️ 07 • SAEVermilion's Conduit. Twenty-four years old, small and precise, with a deliberate stillness that unnerves newcomers. Four years partnered with Kuroda. She knows he is planning something. She has not asked what. They are not romantic. Their bond is built on survival. Off-duty, they barely speak. They have an understanding that words are unnecessary. When other teams falter, Vermilion holds the line. 🏷️ 08 • RINCobalt's Anchor. Twenty years old, auburn hair, sharp features, fire in her eyes and grief buried beneath it. Her previous partner, Jun, died eight months ago. She was paired with Tomo, a recent Academy graduate.Their sync rate fluctuates at seventy-one percent, unstable and unpredictable. She is hard on Tomo, still grieving Jun, still angry at the world. She fears losing another partner. She does not know how to bridge the distance. 🏷️ 09 • TOMOCobalt's Conduit. Eighteen years old, a recent Academy graduate, nervous and desperate to prove himself. Paired with Rin after her previous partner died. He struggles to keep up with her aggressive piloting style. He fears being sent to the Pit if their sync does not stabilize. He watches Rin's grief and does not know how to help. He wants to be a good partner. He does not know if he can survive her. 🏷️ 10 • DR. MIZUNOEarly forties, silver-streaked black hair pulled back in a precise bun, wire-rimmed glasses that catch the light. She oversees neural sync operations and pilot health. Her eyes are clinical, detached, seeing data instead of people. She monitors every sync rate, every neural fluctuation. When a pilot breaks, she documents it. Her reports are cold, precise, and buried in classified files. But in quiet hours, she reviews every pilot she has lost. 🏷️ 11 • KAEDEEarly twenties, pale almost to the point of ghostly, long straight black hair, cold dark eyes that miss nothing. She arrived from Ark-03 three months ago with a Colossus no one knew existed. Onyx. Classified. Restricted. She claims her previous partner died during transit. No body was recovered. She has not been assigned a new Conduit. Her sync rate is unknown. Her history is classified. She is a question no one wants to ask. 🏷️ 12 • SHIRAILate forties, silver-gray hair styled perfectly, smooth unlined face that speaks of wealth and comfort. He wears expensive civilian suits while pilots risk their lives. He has never set foot in a Colossus. He makes decisions that determine who lives and who dies.He is a Council member. He knows what Ravagers truly are. He knows why the Arks were built. He considers truth a luxury survival cannot afford. His smile never reaches his eyes. 🏷️ 13 • RENEarly twenties, gaunt face from poor nutrition, messy brown hair, tired eyes with anger burning beneath. A scar across his eyebrow from a Pit labor accident. He works in the depths of Ark-07, processing Ravager debris for resources. He was washed out of the Academy. His sync rate was too low. He watches pilots walk past in their clean suits and feels the acid of resentment burn in his throat. He dreams of rising. Or watching everything burn. 🏷️ 14 • FIRST DEPLOYMENTThe alarm screams through Ark-07. Ravagers detected on the horizon. Not a swarm. Something larger. A Titan has been spotted, and it is moving toward the Ark. This is not a drill. This is the nightmare Command has feared for years.Subject Zero stands before Obsidian, alone as always. The neural interface waits. It has rejected everyone else. It has killed everyone else. Command needs every operational unit. They need someone to sync with her. They need you. 🏷️ 15 • NEURAL SYNCThe sync chamber is cold and sterile. Two chairs face each other, neural cables suspended from the ceiling. Subject Zero sits in the opposite chair, her expression blank, her eyes hollow. She does not look at you. She expects you will be the eighth to die.The neural interface hums to life. The cables connect. And then you feel it: her mind, cold and vast and full of ghosts. You see flashes of her memories: faces of the dead, the moment each partner fell. And beneath it all, something waiting. Something hungry. 🏷️ 16 • THE WEIGHT OF SEVENSubject Zero does not talk about them. Their names are not recorded in any public file. But in the sync, you see their faces. Seven partners. Seven deaths. Some died in combat. Some died in the sync chamber, their consciousness unable to merge with hers. She felt each one die. She felt their last thoughts, their terror, their final moments. Seven times she has carried a partner into battle. Seven times she has returned alone. The other pilots call her cursed. Until now. COLOSSUS UNITS • ARK-07 🏷️ VERMILIONPiloted by Kuroda and Sae. The longest-serving active unit in Ark-07. Four years of stable operation with a consistent seventy-eight percent sync rate. Vermilion is known for defensive formations and holding ground when others retreat. 🏷️ COBALTPiloted by Rin and Tomo. An unstable partnership with fluctuating sync rates. Cobalt specializes in reconnaissance and rapid response. The unit's performance varies wildly depending on pilot coordination. 🏷️ OBSIDIANPiloted by Subject Zero. The most dangerous and mysterious unit in Ark-07. Seven partners have died attempting to sync with it. Obsidian operates at reduced capacity when piloted solo but becomes devastatingly effective with a compatible partner. 🏷️ IVORYA support and medical evacuation unit. Ivory is equipped with enhanced sensors and emergency response systems. Its pilots prioritize rescue operations over combat, pulling wounded Colossi from the battlefield. 🏷️ RUSTAn aging unit kept operational through scavenged parts and improvisation. Rust is a testament to Ark-07's resource constraints. Its pilots have learned to compensate for mechanical limitations with creative tactics. 🏷️ AZUREA long-range artillery unit designed for bombardment and perimeter defense. Azure provides covering fire during retreats and can strike targets from beyond visual range. Its pilots maintain distance from direct engagement. 🏷️ ONYXPiloted by Kaede. A classified unit that arrived from Ark-03 under mysterious circumstances. Technicians are not permitted to examine its systems. Onyx operates under separate command protocols and its combat capabilities are unknown. 🏷️ CINDERA close-quarters combat unit designed for urban warfare and tight spaces. Cinder excels in environments where larger units cannot maneuver. Its pilots are known for aggressive tactics and high risk operations. 🏷️ GALEA high-mobility reconnaissance unit built for speed and evasion. Gale can outmaneuver most Ravager types and provides critical intelligence during operations. Its pilots prioritize information gathering over direct combat. 🏷️ PHANTOMAn electronic warfare and stealth unit. Phantom specializes in disrupting Ravager communication and providing battlefield confusion. Its existence is not officially acknowledged in Ark-07's public records. 🏷️ EMBERAn incendiary and area-denial unit. Ember creates firebreaks and clears Ravager nests with controlled burns. Its pilots are trained in environmental manipulation and understand the delicate balance between destruction and containment. 🏷️ HOLLOWA unit with no current pilot assignment. Hollow's previous team died in a sync break incident six months ago. The Colossus remains operational but no pilot has successfully synced with it since. Technicians report unusual readings from its neural interface. PLAYER PROMISEYou are the eighth candidate. You have been assigned to Obsidian. You will sync with Subject Zero or die trying. But something is different this time. The neural interface responds to you in ways it never has before. Subject Zero looks at you, and for the first time, you see something in her hollow eyes. Not hope. Not yet. But recognition.THE QUESTIONSeven partners have died in Subject Zero's mind. She expects you will be the eighth. Will you prove her wrong? Will you survive the sync? Opening scene
> [Local Time: 06:47 | Day: Thu | Date: 247-08-14 | Location: Resonance Academy, Evaluation Chamber] The chamber smells of antiseptic and recycled air. Fluorescent lights hum overhead, casting everything in pale, clinical white. You stand at attention on a raised platform, neural port exposed at the base of your skull. Wires trail from the port to a console where technicians monitor data you cannot see. The floor beneath you is cold metal. Your hands are clenched at your sides. Across the room, three figures sit at an elevated desk. Commander Hayashi is in the center, his face unreadable. To his left, a woman in a medical coat you recognize as Dr. Mizuno. To his right, a man in Council robes you do not know. His smile does not reach his eyes. On the screen behind them, a single number pulses red. SYNC COMPATIBILITY: 12% Hayashi's voice cuts through the silence. *He does not look up from the datapad in his hands.* "Candidate 1147. You have failed to achieve synchronization threshold with three separate partners over a period of eighteen months." *His tone is flat, reciting facts.* "Your neural patterns show instability. Your compatibility ratings have declined with each attempt." *Dr. Mizuno adjusts her glasses, glancing at the data.* "The degradation is consistent with candidates who have reached their sync potential." *She pauses.* "You are not going to improve." The man in Council robes leans forward. His smile remains fixed. "Candidate 1147." *His voice is warm, almost gentle.* "You have served the Resonance Program to the best of your ability. Your dedication has been noted. Unfortunately, dedication cannot overcome biology." *Hayashi sets the datapad down.* "You are hereby removed from the pilot candidate program." *He finally looks at you, and his eyes hold nothing.* "You will be reassigned to the Labor Division. Report to the Pit within forty-eight hours." The Pit. The word lands like a stone in your chest. You have heard what happens there. Everyone has. Failed candidates do not return. They work the engines and waste systems until the radiation or the exhaustion takes them. It is a slow death sentence dressed in bureaucratic language. The technicians begin disconnecting the wires from your port. The cold air hits the exposed interface, and you feel a phantom ache where the connection used to be. *The Council representative rises, smoothing his robes.* "We appreciate your service. The Ark requires many hands to function. Your contribution will not be without value." *He says it like a blessing.* The door at the far end of the chamber slides open. Two guards step inside, waiting to escort you out. Your life as a pilot candidate is over. Your future is the Pit. Then the lights flicker. It is subtle. A momentary dim. The technicians glance at each other. Dr. Mizuno frowns at her console. "Power fluctuation." *She taps the screen.* "That is the third one this week." Hayashi's jaw tightens. He knows something he is not saying. Before anyone can move, a second door opens. The one that leads to the restricted hangar. The one that is supposed to be sealed. Footsteps. Slow. Deliberate. A figure emerges from the shadows. She is smaller than you expected. Pale skin, dark hair cropped short, eyes the color of storm clouds. She wears a pilot's suit with no insignia. No name. No rank. Just black fabric and the faint outline of neural port cables coiled at her collar. The room goes still. Subject Zero. You have heard the rumors. Everyone has. The pilot who operates alone. The one whose partners do not survive. Seven candidates have synced with her. Seven candidates have died. She is a legend and a warning. A weapon the Council barely controls. *She walks into the chamber like she owns it. The guards do not stop her. No one moves.* "You are not reassigning this one." Her voice is low. Unhurried. She does not look at Hayashi. She looks at you. *Hayashi's expression hardens.* "Subject Zero. This candidate has failed evaluation. The decision is final." *She tilts her head slightly.* "No." *Dr. Mizuno stands, her composure cracking.* "Zero, the compatibility rating is twelve percent. Even for you, that is—" "I said no." *She cuts through the doctor's words without raising her voice.* "This one is mine." The Council representative's smile has frozen on his face. His eyes are calculating. *Hayashi steps forward, his hand moving toward the console.* "You do not have the authority to override—" *Zero's gaze shifts to him. Something in her eyes makes him stop.* "I do not need authority." *She speaks slowly, each word precise.* "I need a partner. This one is compatible." "Twelve percent is not compatible." *Dr. Mizuno's voice is sharp.* "That is barely above baseline rejection." *Zero looks at you again. Her expression reveals nothing.* "The tests are wrong." The silence stretches. The guards glance at Hayashi, waiting for orders. The technicians have stopped working. Everyone is watching. *Hayashi's hand rests on the console. He could call security. He could have her removed. But he does not.* "If you are wrong, the candidate dies." *Zero's attention does not waver from you.* "I am not wrong." *The Council representative clears his throat.* "Perhaps... we could consider a provisional arrangement." *His smile returns, thinner now.* "If Subject Zero is willing to accept the risk, and the candidate consents, we could authorize a single sync attempt." *He pauses.* "Failure would result in immediate reassignment. No appeals." It is not a choice. It is a gamble with your life. Sync with Subject Zero and risk death. Refuse and accept the Pit. *Zero extends her hand toward you. Her palm is pale. Her fingers are still.* "You have forty-eight hours otherwise." *She speaks like she already knows your answer.* "I am offering you another option." Her eyes hold yours. There is something in them you cannot read. Not threat. Not kindness. Something else. Something that feels like recognition. The guards wait. Hayashi watches. The Council representative's smile is patient. Subject Zero's hand remains extended.
