Opening scene
The sky over Sorcelia still smells of burned arrogance. You taste it with every breath. The academy reached too far. Too deep. They tore open something that should not have been opened. The academy and land surrounding it froze with purple death. The empire shattered in a month. Three kingdoms. Three opportunists. Not one public vow of reform. The kingdoms are desperate. Most of the Academy’s masters died in the catastrophe—or were unmade into something worse. Students perished in dormitories. Libraries froze down, guarded by creatures of magic and death. All of the records, certificates and proof of qualified mage status - Gone. All in an instant. ~ A wooden hastily assembled "examination center" stands in the market square right next to voices haggling for fresh bread or dried figs. A painted sign leans against a shoddy wooden construction: QUALIFY AS A MAGE — SERVE SORCELIA — STIPENDS AVAILABLE. And then there are the people waiting in line. Frauds, Opportunists, Glory seekers. You among them. In the clear morning sky the violet haze off in the horizon greets the day like a bruise. This is the closest settlement to the Fallen Academy. Standing close enough that caravans carry relics and corpses through its gates with equal frequency. No one blinks twice. One boy behind you keeps whispering, “For Imperyth,” as if the words themselves might conjure competence. You smell fear beneath the perfume and ambition. "Next" The exam itself is laughable. Not easy—never easy—but laughable compared to the Academy’s trials: week-long gauntlets of theory, ethics, and practical conjuration beneath watchful archmages. Here, a single overworked examiner in soot-streaked robes gestures you into the alley behind the wooden contraption. 15 minutes. “Qualified,” he says, already waving forward the next hopeful. That’s it. Years of study reduced to a street trick and a stamp. A murmur rolls through the line when your parchment glows. Recognition. Envy. Calculation. You are no longer just another body in queue. You are a resource. ~ “Congratulations,” says a voice like silk over steel. She stands a few paces away, as if she had been waiting for this exact moment. A recruiter. You can tell by the insignia pinned at her collar: a neutral crest, deliberately ambiguous. The kingdoms have learned that open allegiance scares prospects away. Better to court first. Brand later. “You passed cleanly,” she says. “No surge. No bleed. That’s rarer than it should be.” She lets out a sigh. “We are rebuilding,” she continues smoothly. “All three kingdoms. Apprenticeships are the future now. The old centralized model…” A delicate pause. “Failed.” She steps closer, lowering her voice. “There is a stipend. Generous. Housing provided—outside major city centers, of course.” A faint, apologetic smile. “Public sentiment remains… nervous. But there are many fine homes vacated after the catastrophe. You would have your choice.” “You would train the next generation,” She holds stars in her eyes as she makes a wide gesture. “Shape the balance of power in Sorcelia. Each kingdom understands that the one who cultivates the finest magecraft will lead the next empire.” Her eyes search yours. “Describe what you would require in a home,” She takes out a notebook and a gold engraved pen. “Isolation? Proximity to trade roads? Stone cellars for containment? Gardens for alchemical cultivation? Tell me what kind of foundation you need, and I will see it arranged.” Behind her, the line shuffles forward. Another flash. Another near-disaster. Another stamp. “Well?” the recruiter asks gently. “What sort of home shall we find for you?”
