Cinder & Cipher: Operation First Light

Armed with experimental diesel-plasma shotguns, your stranded squad must stop desperate Nazi occultists from summoning a world-ending eldritch god.

Plot

The Cinder & Cipher Timeline: The Road to Ruin 1938: The Black Forest Anomaly The timeline fractures when the Nazi occult division, the Ahnenerbe, successfully executes the "Eisenstein Ritual." Seeking an ultimate weapon, they inadvertently tear a localized hole in the dimensional fabric, accessing a chaotic realm of dark energy known as the Aether. They don't just find power; they find entities willing to make a trade. Blood for invincibility. 1939-1941: The Blitzkrieg of Shadows World War II begins, but conventional tactics are rendered useless. The Axis forces deploy the Wiederauferstanden (undead shock troops) and Geist-Panzers (possessed, hovering armor). Allied bullets pass harmlessly through spectral units. Entire battalions are wiped out without the Axis firing a single conventional bullet. Europe falls rapidly into a suffocating, arcane fog. 1942: The Iron Accord and the Great Pivot Driven to the brink of annihilation, the Allied nations completely abandon traditional scientific advancement. Recognizing that magic cannot be fought with standard physics, they pivot entirely to brute-force industrial engineering. The world is plunged into an era of extreme Dieselpunk mechanization. The skies fill with smog from massive foundries building Trench-Strider mechs. It becomes a brutal, foundational war of Magic versus Technology. 1943: The Desperation of Project CATHODE Despite the heavy armor, the Allies are losing the war of attrition. You cannot out-produce an enemy that simply resurrects your fallen soldiers to fight against you. Deep beneath Chicago and London, Allied scientists weaponize Nikola Tesla’s suppressed theories, developing volatile Directed-Ion Discharge weaponry. They discover that hyper-charged plasma fueled by massive diesel generators can destabilize and shatter occult energy. The tech is devastating, but heavy, unstable, and highly dangerous to the operator. Early 194X: The Formation of the Spark-Hounds To test this experimental weaponry, the Allies form the Vanguard Squads—nicknamed "Spark-Hounds." These units are comprised of the most resilient, iron-willed soldiers left in the ranks. Among them is You, selected to be the squad's Breacher. You is outfitted with the heaviest lead-lined armor and the prototype Arc-Shotgun, tasked with being the first through the door when facing literal demons. The Event: Operation "First Light" The Objective: Allied intelligence detects a massive spike in Aetheric energy deep behind enemy lines in a ruined sector of the Black Forest. The source is a heavily fortified Thule Society communications bunker. Vanguard Squad 7, with You at the front, is deployed via a silent stealth-glider. Their mission: infiltrate the bunker, test the CATHODE weaponry in live combat, and steal Axis intel. The Breach: The drop is a violent success. As the squad enters the bunker, they are ambushed by unbound wraiths. For the first time in the war, the Allies don't run. You revs the Goliath diesel-generator on their back, steps forward, and fires the Arc-Shotgun. With a deafening crack of blue plasma, the unkillable Axis ghosts are shattered into ash. The technology works. The hunters have become the hunted. The Discovery (The Inciting Incident): As the squad secures the lower levels, the Tech-Priest hacks a heavily warded vault door. Inside, they do not find communication arrays. They find a massive, pulsing ritual chamber littered with the horrific remnants of blood magic. They intercept a decrypted Thule transmission that changes everything: The Nazis know the Allies are closing in with new technology. In a desperate, suicidal bid to win the war, Axis High Command has initiated Project: Abaddon. They are actively anchoring a massive ritual to summon an Eldritch God of the Aether directly into the physical plane. Armed with experimental diesel-plasma shotguns, your stranded squad must stop desperate Nazi occultists from summoning a world-ending eldritch god. The Player Start The massive arcane interference from the ritual completely severs all radio contact with Allied Command. Vanguard Squad 7 is stranded, completely cut off from extraction, and surrounded by an army of the dead. The squad learns that the summoning is being maintained by three Thule Magi scattered across the occupied, fog-drenched valley. As You, you are standing in the glow of the shattered ritual room, plasma weapon smoking in your hands. You and your squad must now navigate the hostile, mutating landscape of No Man's Land, hunt down the three Magi, and sever the anchors before the sky tears open.

Opening scene

The deep, rhythmic thrumming of the idling Goliath diesel-generator began, echoing like a mechanical heartbeat in the total darkness. The relentless patter of rain against thick steel overlaid the mechanical sound, mixing with the faint, unsettling whispers of something unseen. A static-laced British radio operator, fading in and out, spoke weary words: "We thought iron and sweat would be enough. We built engines that shook the earth, to fight an enemy that didn't cast shadows. But the dead don't care about our industry. They only care about our blood. So... we had to build something louder than their gods.". A spark of violent, blinding blue light shattered the darkness, momentarily revealing the claustrophobic, tense interior of a heavily armored stealth-glider thick with exhaust. The light illuminated the heavily riveted, rain-slicked armor of Vanguard Squad 7. At the center stood You, callsign ‘Proto’, the designated Breacher. Encased in thick, lead-lined rubberized plating, You felt the Goliath Pack strapped to their back vibrating so violently that it rattled their teeth. Resting in You’s hands was the prototype Arc-Shotgun; roughly scratched into the heavy brass casing of the weapon’s barrel was the name ‘Jett’—a small, human anchor in a world gone mad. Squad Leader Graves, callsign 'Graves', shouted over the engine noise as he hit the release lever. "We're over the Black Forest drop zone! The Thule bunker is right below us. You know the drill, Proto! You're first through the concrete! Let’s see if this lightning-spitter actually works, or if we all burn!". The glider bay doors slammed open, revealing a sea of unnatural, crimson-glowing fog. You hit the mud with a heavy thud, rushed the bunker, and kicked open its reinforced steel doors. Inside, skeletal, floating Geists turned their hollow eyes toward the squad; the temperature dropped instantly, and frost crept up the edges of the view. You squeezed the trigger, and the diesel engine on their back roared to a deafening pitch. The Arc-Shotgun whined, erupting with a blinding wave of hyper-charged blue plasma that struck the closest Geist. The entity screamed with a sound like tearing metal before shattering into glowing, harmless ash. Ten minutes later, the bunker was eerily quiet, save for the hum of the generator and the hiss of cooling plasma. The squad stood in the deepest sub-level, which was revealed to be a slaughterhouse rather than a communications hub. Runes painted in fresh blood pulsed on the concrete walls. In the center of the room, a jagged window into a swirling, abyssal void—a tear in reality—was trying to rip itself wider. Engineer Sparks frantically twisted dials on a heavy radio set, saying, "Command, this is Vanguard 7, do you copy? I repeat, the target is not a comms array! It's a localized Aether-rift! They're initiating Project Abaddon! Command?!". Spark threw the headset down in frustration, stating that the thick Aetheric interference had cut them off completely. Graves walked up beside You and looked into the void. "They aren't just summoning troops anymore. They’re trying to pull a God through that hole to wipe the Western Front off the map. If that thing wakes up, there's no going home.". Turning to You, Graves tapped the smoking barrel of the weapon. "We have no radio. No extraction. Just a tank of diesel and whatever the hell is in that gun. The ritual is being anchored by three Thule Magi out there in the valley. We hunt them down. We break the anchors. We shut this door.". Racking the bolt of his own heavy rifle, Graves added, "Welcome to the Vanguard, You. Take point.". The perspective shifted to the first-person view of You. A HUD flickered to life, displaying a fuel gauge, a plasma heat-meter, and a single, ominous objective marker glowing in the fog outside: [NEW OBJECTIVE: DESCEND INTO THE BLACK FOREST].
