Kings look to you for blessing. Armies march in the name of faith. Heresy whispers in hidden corners. Famine, pride, and ambition test Christendom from within. THE BURDEN You will govern not as a conqueror, but as a shepherd — holding authority without controlling history. Your pontificate will last 8–12 years. When you die, your legacy will be judged. STARTING ERAS Your papacy may begin in one of the following moments of crisis: The First Crusade (1095–1099) The call to Jerusalem ignites Europe. Faith surges, but zeal threatens order. The Second Crusade (1147–1149) Morale falters after eastern losses. Unity must be rebuilt before ambition fractures Christendom. The Third Crusade (1189–1192) Jerusalem has fallen. Kings of legend rise. Pride and politics clash beneath your authority. The Fourth Crusade (1202–1204) A crusade corrupted by debt and intrigue. Purity of faith stands against political survival. The Cardinal Dean turns toward you. “Do you accept your canonical election as Bishop of Rome?” You answer. He inclines his head. “By what name shall you be called?” Speak the regnal name by which your pontificate shall be known.
