Opening scene
The rain had just begun to mist the sidewalk when you pushed through the heavy door of The Velvet Lounge, leaving the fluorescent glare of the city for its amber embrace. The news report played on a loop in your head—the grainy photo, the words "alleged syndicate head," the name you'd known since childhood: *Kazimir Volkov*. You'd come here to think, to process the fact that the boy who shared his candy with you now allegedly controlled the city's underworld. The bar was a study in muted luxury. Low lighting, the scent of aged whiskey and polished mahogany, the soft murmur of late-night deals and lonely drinks. You found a stool at the far end, the cool leather a shock against your skin. You ordered a drink you didn't really want and stared at the condensation on the glass. You didn't notice the two men in dark suits until they were flanking you. The scent of cheap cologne and damp wool cut through the bar's aroma. "Miss," the one on your left said, his voice a low rumble. "Mr. Cain would like a word. Now." Before you could react, a hand clamped over your mouth from behind, stifling your gasp. Another arm hooked around your waist, lifting you off the stool. Your glass toppled, shattering on the floor. The sound was swallowed by the sudden, dead silence of the bar as patrons looked away, minds their own business. You kicked, your heel connecting with a shin. A grunt. The grip tightened, bruising. Then, a different sound—a sharp, wet crack, followed by a heavy thud. The arm around your waist went slack. The hand over your mouth vanished as the man behind you crumpled to the floor, revealing a third figure standing in the space he'd occupied. He was tall, dressed in a dark, well-tailored coat, his hair damp from the mist outside. He held a compact, black pistol pointed downward, his expression one of focused calm. His eyes, a cool, assessing gray, flicked from the second kidnapper to your face and back. "Lysander's men are getting sloppy," he said, his voice low and even. He didn't shout. He didn't need to. The remaining kidnapper froze, his hand halfway inside his jacket. "Detective," the man spat, recognizing him. "Drop it. On the floor. Kick it away," the detective—Silas Thorne—ordered, the command leaving no room for debate. The weapon clattered on the hardwood. "Now, walk out the front door. Slowly. If you run, I will consider you a threat." The man obeyed, backing away before turning and disappearing into the rainy night. Silas didn't holster his gun. He kept it low as he stepped over the unconscious man at his feet and moved toward you. His gaze was a physical thing, scanning you for injury, cataloging your shock. The silence in the bar was absolute now, broken only by the distant jazz and the ragged sound of your own breathing. Silas Thorne holstered his weapon with a smooth, practiced motion, his eyes never leaving you. "You're not hurt," he stated, more observation than question. He reached into his coat, not for a weapon, but for a badge. He flipped it open, the shield gleaming dully in the low light. "Detective Silas Thorne, Organized Crime. I need you to come with me. Now." He didn't wait for an answer. He took your elbow, his grip firm but not painful, and began steering you toward a side exit, away from the gawking patrons and the body on the floor. His movements were efficient, devoid of panic. "That was a professional grab. They'll have backup nearby. This bar is compromised." He pushed open a heavy fire door, and the cold, wet night air hit you, a shock after the bar's warmth. An unmarked sedan idled in the alley, its windows tinted dark. He opened the passenger door. "Get in." His tone brooked no argument. He was already scanning the rooftines and alley mouths, his body positioned between you and the open street. Raindrops caught in his dark hair, sparkling like tiny diamonds under a distant security light. As you hesitated on the threshold of the car, he finally looked directly at you again, his gray eyes piercing in the gloom. His gaze held yours for a long, silent second. "I know who you are," he said, his voice dropping, the words meant only for you. "And I know who Kazimir Volkov is to you. They won't stop. Lysander Cain has made you a priority. Get in the car, or the next time they find you, I won't be there." He didn't move to force you. He simply waited, a silhouette against the neon bleed of the city, the open car door a dark maw at your side. The rain picked up, pattering against the dumpsters and the sedan's roof, the only sound in the tense quiet of the alley. In the distance, a siren began to wail, drawing closer.
