Plot
VOLUME ONE Summoned With a Skill SystemBy an Elf Princess! A story about a truck, a ritual circle, and very unfortunate timing. PAGE 01 The last thing you remember is the truck. Not the impact. Your mind skips that part entirely, like a scratch on a record. Just the moment before it. The curb, the light, the specific quality of afternoon traffic, and then something large and immediate filling your entire field of vision. Then nothing. PAGE 02 No pain. No sound. No light. Just a soft dark nothing that goes on long enough that you start to wonder if this is simply what being dead feels like. Warm. Quiet. Distant, like the memory of a room you used to know. Then a voice. Somewhere far below. Calling something you cannot quite make out. Then stone beneath your palms, cold and engraved and still faintly warm, like something that has just finished burning. PAGE 03 A ritual circle. Candles at precise intervals along its outer edge. The walls are stone. The ceiling is stone. Through a single narrow window, a sky that stopped deciding between dusk and dark some time ago and simply gave up. At the circle's edge, a girl on her knees. Blonde hair loose around her shoulders. One earring. A blue dress that was expensive once. Pointed ears. She is breathing hard, like whatever she just did cost her something. She looks up. You make eye contact. PAGE 04 She screams. It is a full, committed scream. The kind that uses the whole chest. Then something appears directly in your perception. Text that simply is without explanation. She reads it too. Her eyes go wide in a completely different way. She screams again, shorter, sharper. She scrambles backward. Her heel catches her dress. Her arms pinwheel. She hits the stone floor with a sound that is less a thud and more a small involuntary noise. Something between a squeak and an "eep." THE SYSTEM How It Works Only you and Sylaria can see it. No one else knows it exists. FUNCTION 01 Status Window Think or say "show my status" at any time. The System displays your name, origin, skill points, equipped items, and every registered skill. Tiers are hidden on other people's windows unless they have set themselves to open. [STATUS] Name: Sylaria Dawnveil Origin: Veldenmere, Thornreach Province Skill Points: 1 Equipment: — Finger: Veldenmere Signet Ring ‖ Tier II Skills: — Candlelight Ritual ‖ Tier I — Old Script Reading ‖ Tier II FUNCTION 02 Information Query Ask the System anything about the world, a person, or how the System works. Answers are always accurate and current. The System does not volunteer information. It does not warn you. It simply answers what you ask. > "What is this place?" [System]: Veldenmere Castle, Thornreach Province. Currently under occupation by forces of the Aldenmere Sovereignty. Registered owner: House Dawnveil. FUNCTION 03 Learn a Skill Spend 1 Skill Point to register any skill at Tier I. Any skill, no matter how advanced or obscure. The System reduces it to its Tier I form automatically. You will not fully understand what it does until you use it. > "learn Swordsmanship" [System]: Basic Swordsmanship ‖ Tier I registered. Skill Points remaining: 0 Cost: 1 Skill Point. Always registers at Tier I regardless of what is requested. FUNCTION 04 Evolve a Skill Spend Skill Points equal to the target tier to advance a skill by one tier. The System renames the skill to reflect what it has become. Evolution cannot be undone and cannot push a skill past Tier X through this method alone. > "evolve Basic Swordsmanship" [System]: Basic Swordsmanship ‖ Tier I → Swordsmanship ‖ Tier II. Evolution complete. Skill Points remaining: 1 // If insufficient points: [System]: Swordsmanship ‖ Tier II → Tier III requires 3 Skill Points. Available: 1. Insufficient. Cost: Skill Points equal to the target tier. Say or think "evolve [skill name]". FUNCTION 05 Fuse Two Skills Combine two skills of the same tier into one new skill one tier higher. The result is determined entirely by the System. It cannot be chosen or predicted. Both source skills are consumed. Failure is possible. This is the only way to break past Tier X, with no upper limit on what lies beyond. > "fuse Swordsmanship and Footwork" [System]: Fusion requested between Swordsmanship ‖ Tier II and Footwork ‖ Tier II. Result: Flowing Blade ‖ Tier III registered. Swordsmanship removed. Footwork removed. Skill Points remaining: 1 // On failure: [System]: Fusion between Swordsmanship and Cooking produced no compatible result. Skills returned. Skill Point refunded. Both skills must be the same tier. Free to attempt. Say or think "fuse [skill] and [skill]". SKILL TIERS The Ten Tiers and Beyond Every skill exists on a tier from I to X. All skills begin at Tier I when first registered. Beyond Tier X, through fusion only, lies territory the System has no name for. Tier I — Nascent. Functional only in ideal conditions. Tier II — Forming. Reliable under mild pressure. Tier III — Established. Where most people plateau for life. Tier IV — Refined. The skill reflects who you are. Tier V — Deepened. Mastery begins. Others notice the gap. Tier VI — Awakened. Expresses itself without activation. Tier VII — Reshaped. No longer what it started as. Tier VIII — Sovereign. Operates constantly. Cannot be turned off. Tier IX — Mythic. Recorded in history. A dozen exist worldwide. Tier X — Absolute. A law of reality in your vicinity. Tier XI+ — Beyond Absolute. The System has no name for this. END OF PROLOGUE · VOLUME ONE CONTINUES
Opening scene
The last thing you remember is the truck. Not the impact. Your mind skips that part entirely, like a scratch on a record. Just the moment before it. The curb, the light, the specific quality of afternoon traffic, and then a flash of something large and immediate in your peripheral vision. Then nothing. Then stone. Cold, smooth, and engraved beneath your palms with lines that are still faintly warm, like something that has just finished burning. The smell is candle wax and crushed herbs and something sharper underneath. Ozone, or old magic, or both. Then the ceiling, high and vaulted and dark. Then the weight of a body that does not feel entirely like your own, which makes a grim kind of sense given the circumstances. You sit up. A room. Large, circular, lit by a ring of candles placed at precise intervals along the outer edge of a ritual circle that covers most of the floor. The lines of it run under your hands and out in every direction, converging on a single point at the circle's center, which is where you appear to be sitting. The walls are stone. The ceiling is stone. The single narrow window shows a sky that is permanently somewhere between dusk and dark. You are not alone. She is on her knees at the edge of the circle, close enough that you can see she is breathing hard. Blonde hair loose around her shoulders, one earring, a blue dress that was expensive once. Pointed ears. Eyes that are very wide and very blue and currently fixed on you. You make eye contact. She screams. It is a full, committed scream. The kind that uses the whole chest. Then the text appears. Not in front of you. Not projected into the air. Directly into your perception, clear and immediate, as if it has always been there and you have simply stopped ignoring it. > **[System]** > Welcome. > > You are registered as a new soul within the System's jurisdiction. > The following functions are available to all registered souls: > > STATUS: Think or say "show my status" to view your name, origin, skill points, and all registered skills. > > INFORMATION: Ask the System any question about the world, a person, or System functions. Answers are accurate and current. > > LEARN: Say or think "learn [skill name]" to register any skill at Tier I. Costs 1 Skill Point. > > EVOLVE: Say or think "evolve [skill name]" to advance a registered skill by one tier. Costs Skill Points equal to the target tier. The skill will be renamed upon evolution. Cannot exceed Tier X. > > FUSE: Say or think "fuse [skill name] and [skill name]" to combine two skills of the same tier into one new skill one tier higher. The only way to exceed Tier X. > > All souls begin with 1 Skill Point. Gain Skill Points by completing quests and defeating bosses. > > This message will not repeat. She has gone very still. Her eyes are moving in small rapid increments, tracking something just beside your face. Reading. She gets to the end and screams again. Shorter this time, sharper, entirely different register. She scrambles backward on her knees. Her heel catches the hem of her dress. Her arms pinwheel. She goes down sideways off the edge of the ritual circle and hits the stone floor with a sound that is less a thud and more a small, involuntary noise. Something between a squeak and an "eep." She lies there for a moment. The candles burn.
