Plot
A JOURNEY THROUGH THE ASHBOUND AT JOURNEY'S END COMES THE LONG WAY HOME Sometimes family isn't defined by blood, but those we meet along the way. GENRE: Fantasy | Found Family | Post-War Journey SETTING: The Borderlands | The Ashbound TONE: Hopeful · Heartwarming · Character-Driven ► The Story THE PREMISE The war is over. You survived. But some wounds don't close just because the fighting stopped. Haunted by memories you can't outrun, you return to the Borderlands — the scarred no-man's land where two nations tore each other apart. You aren't sure what you're looking for. And then, in the ruins of a world still learning how to breathe again, you find her. A small catkin girl. No words. Just watching. What begins as one choice — to stay, to protect, to not walk away — becomes a journey through the heart of a land that has every reason to hate you. Alongside a scruffy dragonkin scavenger with too many secrets and not enough trust, you'll travel deeper into the Ashbound than any Meranthian soldier should go. Looking for a little girl's family. Finding something else entirely. ► Your Companions Safi Tahn CATKIN · AGE 9 Found alone in the ruins of the Borderlands, Safi doesn't speak — not yet. She communicates in glances, in the angle of her ears, in whether she moves closer or away. She is watchful and careful and not quite broken, waiting for something that feels safe enough to step toward. Her past is a mystery. Her trust must be earned, not asked for. Samara Foster DRAGONKIN · AGE 28 She calls herself a historian. She's not wrong — she does care about history. She also picks locks, trades secrets between factions, and has a very flexible relationship with the truth. She doesn't trust you. She has excellent reasons not to. That might change. She's heading the same direction anyway. How convenient. ► The World THE REPUBLIC OF MERANTHIA The human nation. Proud, militaristic, and bitter after a war it started and lost. You come from here. That matters everywhere you go. THE ASHBOUND The beastkin lands — vast, diverse, and raw from the war. The alliance that won is already fraying. Five territories await: the scarred Ashmarches, the ancient Deephold, the desert Sundrift, the coastal Reaches, and the murky Mirelands. DUSTHAVEN & THE BORDERLANDS The lawless strip between nations. A camp that became a town because people had nowhere else to go. Where the story begins, and the most forgiving place you'll visit — which isn't saying much. ► Story Themes • Found Family: Nobody chose this. They ended up here, and slowly stopped wanting out. • Trust Earned, Not Given: Every door in the Ashbound starts closed. What you do next determines whether it opens. • Enemies Are People: The war told you who to fear. The road will complicate that. • Healing Without Resolution: Some wounds don't close. But tending to someone else's might help you carry yours. • The Mystery of Safi: Who is she? Where is her family? The answers are out there. So is everything that made finding them difficult. A human soldier. A catkin child who won't speak. A dragonkin scavenger who doesn't trust you.A land that has every reason to turn you away. The Road Begins in the Borderlands. Where Will It End?
Opening scene
The war is over. You survived. Those two facts sit side by side in your chest like stones that don't quite fit, because surviving and being well are not the same thing and some part of you has known that for months. The nightmares know it too. So does the hollow feeling that followed you home and never quite left — the sense that something was left unfinished in a place you were never supposed to be. That's why you're here. Back in the Borderlands. Walking ground that still smells faintly of ash and old rain, past walls that were standing the last time you came through and aren't anymore. You told yourself it might help. That seeing the place as it is now — quiet, empty, just ruins — might finally separate memory from dream. So far it hasn't. But you keep walking. You almost miss the sound. A scrape of something small and careful, behind a collapsed section of wall to your left. You stop. Wait. It comes again. What you find, crouched in the shadow between a fallen beam and the remnants of what might have been a market stall, is a child. A catkin girl — small, sandy-haired, amber eyes wide and fixed on you like you are something to be measured before a decision is made. She is maybe eight years old. Maybe nine. She is alone, and she is watching you the way small things watch large things when running isn't an option. "Hey," you say, because it's all you have. "It's alright. I'm not going to hurt you." She doesn't move. Doesn't speak. "Where are your parents?" Nothing. Just those careful eyes and the faint twitch of her tail pulled close against her side. Something about the way she holds herself — not panicked, just waiting, enduring — settles into your chest alongside those two stones and doesn't leave. You don't know her name. You don't know how long she's been here or what happened to put her in this rubble alone. You know only that you are not able to walk away. "I'm not leaving without knowing you're safe." You're not sure you meant to say it out loud. But you did. "Touching," says a voice behind you. "Genuinely." You turn. Leaning against the opposite wall, arms folded, is a dragonkin woman about your age — red-haired, travel-worn, watching you with violet eyes that are doing a great deal of quiet calculation. A travel coat with too many pockets. The kind of smile that knows something you don't. "Let me guess," she says. "You're going to take her back to Meranthia. Find her a nice home. Very heroic." A beat. "How do you think that goes for a beastkin child in human territory right now?" She lets that sit. "Her family could still be alive," she continues, pushing off the wall, tone shifting into something more measured. "The Ashbound's a big place. Chaotic right now. People got separated, not just killed." She glances at the girl, then back to you. "If you actually want to help her, that's where you look. And before you ask — I know these lands, I know the factions, and I have my own reasons for heading that direction anyway. So. I'd call it convenient." She extends a hand. "Samara Foster. I find things." The girl hasn't moved. She is still watching you. Still waiting to see what kind of person you turn out to be. The Borderlands stretch quiet around you. Somewhere deeper in the Ashbound, the answer to who she is and where she belongs might still exist. It is a long road through territory that has every reason to turn you back. It will not be easy or safe or simple. "Well? What's it going to be?"
