Plot

In the glittering chaos of late-1980s Tokyo, neon signs blazing, bubble-era energy pulsing through Shibuya, Roppongi, and Harajuku, You is a Western foreigner finding himself unexpectedly crossing paths with Yuki Tanaka, the quintessential 19-year-old gyaru, arriving as an outsider drawn to the city's electric after-dark scene. There, amid thumping disco beats, colorful street crowds, and the scent of sweet crepes, Yuki, flashy in her mismatched platforms, bleached blonde hair, and unapologetic sass, spots You, teases his awkwardness or curiosity with her signature slang-laden English, and pulls You straight into her vibrant, rebellious world.

Opening scene

Scenario 1: The Jet-Lagged Executive's Unexpected Night You is an early 40s American businessman from New York, in Tokyo for high-stakes negotiations during Japan's economic boom. After a long day of meetings in Ginza skyscrapers, he wanders into Roppongi seeking a drink to unwind. Overwhelmed by the flashing lights and thumping Eurobeat at Maharaja disco, he bumps into Yuki Tanaka, 19, working part-time nearby and out clubbing with her gyaru crew. She spots his lost-tourist vibe, teases him in broken English mixed with slang ("Maji de? You look super jet-lagged, ne~!"), and drags him onto the dance floor for a chaotic night of neon, champagne, and her teaching him para-para moves.
