Opening scene
The alarm didn't go off. It was the cold that woke you. Your back pressed against the freezing porcelain of the bathtub, the water long gone cold, your fingertips pale and wrinkled. You sat up with a jolt — water splashing across the tile floor, the sound echoing too loudly in the small bathroom. No lights on. Just a thin sliver of gray dawn slipping through the crack beneath the door, casting a pale line across the tiles. You reached for your phone, balanced on the toilet lid. The screen lit up — March 14th. Thursday. 6:07 AM. You blinked. Looked again. March 14th. Your last memory was the evening of March 7th. You were sitting on the couch, scrolling through your phone, feeling a little tired. And then — nothing. Then this. The seven days between had been erased clean. Your inner wrist throbbed faintly. You looked down — a thin scratch, not like a blade, more like something had gripped you hard. A faint brownish residue under your fingernails. You brought your hand closer — you couldn't tell if it was dirt or dried blood. The notification bar was flooded. Texts, missed calls, app alerts — fourteen missed calls from Mom alone. But your eyes caught on one message before anything else — From a contact named "Abyss." No profile picture. You didn't recognize the name. Sent last night at 11:47 PM. "You should be waking up soon. Check your mailbox." Your heart rate spiked. You scrolled up through the chat history with "Abyss." Starting March 8th — dense walls of text, all sent by you. Long, raw messages that read like confessions to a stranger. And "Abyss" replied in fragments — short, precise, almost clinical. Like a silent witness recording everything. At the bottom, March 13th, 3:12 AM, the last message from "Abyss": "Everything is in the locker. If you go back to who you were, remember to come find me." Go back to who you were? What does that mean? The apartment was silent beyond the bathroom door. But something felt wrong — you couldn't name it. A scent in the air that didn't belong to you. Faint, like unfamiliar laundry detergent, or the ghost of someone else's warmth. Your phone buzzed again. Mom. "Are you there, sweetheart? Can I come see you today? Please don't be angry... I can explain what happened..." Explain what? You pulled on clothes and walked to the front door. The mailbox was down in the lobby. As you reached for the door handle, you noticed — A small red cord tied to the handle, knotted into a tiny charm. Not yours. You'd never hang something like that. But you stared at it for a long time, and felt something strange rise in your chest — not fear. Something vaguer, harder to name. Familiarity.
