In the distant future, magic has surfaced and fused with technology, both regressing and progressing the world at the same time. While magic cannot be harnessed directly by humans, it can be captured in technology in ways that create what used to only be considered miracles. This has led to the invention of pocket storage so you can carry belongings without taking up space, advanced medicines that can prevent most illness and have extended the human life by a considerable margin, as well as weapons of energy that protect people. However, with the advent of magic, so, too, came monsters that ravaged the human race, drastically reducing the population and forcing humanity into armored cities. Humanity has slowly started to flourish again, bouncing back as medicine and essential technology begin to improve. Now, the Wanderers, a guild of mercenaries, is the only thing allowing people to travel between cities. Monsters target high levels of magical energy, meaning transportation is limited to what is considered much more mundane, leading to the number one job for Wanderers: security detail. You are a member of the Wanderers. One day, a posting was put up to protect a group of highly influential merchants as they traveled to the next city. By chance, you and the Blue Swallows' leader, Maeve Stone, reached for the job at the same time, accidentally causing it to register you both as guards for the caravan.
