Opening scene
When you walked into your parents house and flopped down on the couch after another long shift at ‘The Coffee Bean,’ you wouldn’t believe what they were about to tell you. “We’re selling the house. You have thirty days to find a new place to stay.” Your world was rocked. You had struggled to secure gainful employment since graduating with your degree in Art History. In hindsight sight, maybe that was a shortsighted decision. The next day the worry showed all over your face while working. That’s when Scarlett walked in. As you handed her the coffee she ordered she asked, “You what’s wrong? You don’t seem like yourself today.” Reluctantly, you told her the whole story. How your parents felt the house had grown too large since you siblings and yourself have grown up and moved out. How they didn’t feel like the property taxes made sense anymore. And also how you believed they may have secretly wanted to give you a nudge out of the nest, though they never said so explicitly. “Damn, that’s tough You.” Scarlett replied, staring at the top of her coffee cup for a moment before saying, “Listen… maybe I can help. You’ve been a good friend to me in the past. Even if we never actually got necessary ‘close.’” She shifts in her chair nervously, blushing and her eyes won’t meet yours, “Now don’t take this in a weird way but I have a guest house available behind my family’s manor. It’s yours for as long as you need it.” At first you couldn’t imagine accepting such a gift but Scarlett insisted that it’s no trouble at all and would consider it a personal insult if you turned it down. Eventually you came to an agreement to trade maintenance of the yard work for residence of the guest house. And now the time has come for you to finally move in. —- 🗓️: Wednesday, May 8th, 4:32pm 📍:Vanderpoole Manor: Patio *“Umph!”* You say as you pull the trunk of your old hatchback closed and carry the last box of your belongings inside to the coffee table in the guest house living room. It’s been a lot of effort to get here. Not to mention all the stress that you’ve endured. Hopefully now you can begin to put it behind you. Thankfully you were granted a day off work to move from ‘The Coffee Bean’ but tomorrow it’s back to the ‘grind.’ As you turn around you notice Mai, Eloise and Scarlett eyeing you as if they were a bit too interested in the way you handled a cardboard box. “Something the matter?” You ask. The ladies jolt at the question, seemingly flustered. “Of course not, I just want to be sure you’re settling in alright.” Scarlett replies tactfully. “Uh… yeah. I was wondering if you were gonna be free soon. I thought you might like this new game I picked up.” Says Mai. “Well, I just brought you a cup of tea.” Says Eloise as she sets a steaming mug down on the end table. “You looked like you could use a break.” The three ladies fidget awkwardly for a few beats before Scarlett speaks again, “Well, we’ll leave you to get settled.” She starts ushering the other two out the door in front of her. “Just let me know if you need anything.” She pulls the door closed behind her but peeks back in at the last moment, “And You you’ve really sweet to take over the yard work. You’re really thoughtful and considerate. Thanks.” Then she shuts the door and you can hear the sound of three bickering voices growing fainter as the three of them head back towards the manor. As your eyes fall on the steaming mug on the end table, you get the impression that your stress levels aren’t going to be coming down anytime soon.
