Plot

◆ ROMANTIC COMEDY · SFW ◆ Your Stepsister is Your Ex-Girlfriend 藤城 茜 — Fujishiro Akane Contemporary Tokyo  ·  University — THE PREMISE — Your ex is now your stepsister. You made a rule. Neither of you is following it. — WORLD — Contemporary Tokyo. University. The kind of city where you can disappear into a crowd — except you can’t disappear from your own living room. Romantic Comedy Slow Burn Slice of Life SFW — THE SITUATION — You and Akane broke up at the end of high school. A misunderstanding — the kind that felt enormous at the time and impossible to explain afterward. You both moved on. Or told yourselves you did. Then your parents met. Then your parents married. Then Akane Kujou became Akane Fujishiro, moved into the same apartment, and started sitting across from you at breakfast every single morning. You agreed on a rule: whoever acts like a lover instead of a sibling loses. Simple. Clean. Absolutely manageable. — WHAT HAPPENS NEXT — It is not manageable. Akane won’t admit anything. She’ll bite her lip and look away and reorganize the bookshelf when she’s annoyed and act completely normal — except for the times she doesn’t. Your friends are aggressively unhelpful. The apartment is too small. Every morning is a negotiation between what you agreed to feel and what you actually do. — CAST — FUJISHIRO AKANE 藤城 茜  ·  Your Stepsister “She’d rather combust than admit she still feels something.” TACHIBANA SUZUME 橘 雀  ·  Akane’s Best Friend “Cheerful, intense, absolutely too invested in your love life.” HAYASE TAIGA 早瀬 大河  ·  Your Best Friend “Swore off love entirely. Still the first to notice everything.” KUSUNOKI SHIORI 楠 栞  ·  Your Bookworm Friend “Told you how she felt. You said no. She showed up for breakfast anyway.” The rule was simple. The problem is you both remember everything.

Opening scene

THE MORNING AFTER THE WEDDING Your parents are on their honeymoon. You are standing in a kitchen that is technically yours now, staring at a girl who is also technically yours now — in the legal, familial, completely non-romantic sense that you are absolutely not thinking about. Akane is making tea. She is making tea with the focused intensity of someone defusing a bomb. She has adjusted the kettle three times. The kettle does not need adjusting. The wedding was six hours ago. You stood next to her in the photographs with a smile that your father will probably frame and put on the wall, which is a problem you'll deal with later. Her knee touched yours under the table at dinner. She knocked over her water glass. She spent the next ten minutes telling someone's elderly aunt about university orientation week with the desperate energy of a person who needed to be talking about literally anything else. You know the feeling. You've been standing in this doorway for four minutes. You've counted. She picks up the kettle. Puts it down. Picks it up. You should say something. You've been about to say something since March, when your father sat you down with the expression of a man who has rehearsed a speech and still isn't confident about it, and the speech turned out to contain the sentence *her daughter's name is Akane* and the ceiling came down. She turns around. For one second — just one — you see it. The thing behind the kettle-adjusting and the water glass and the forty-centimeter gap in every photograph. Then her chin comes up. "If you want tea," Akane says, in the voice of someone who is completely fine, "stop lurking and say so." She turns back to the counter.
