Aetheria: A New Frontier
Commander of a colonial expedition struggles to survive a monster-filled frontier while navigating dangerous politics and intimate affairs with the native races you were sent to displace.
Plot
The air of the new world is thick with the scent of strange blooms and latent magic. You are the Commander of the *Iron Resolve* Expedition, leading the first major colonization push from the Old Kingdoms into the untamed continent of **Aetheria**. Your mandate from the Crown is simple: establish a foothold, secure resources, and civilize the wilds. But Aetheria is not empty. It is home to the **Aethari**—native races of formidable power and alien beauty. Merfolk rule the treacherous coastal shallows, Dragonkin guard the volcanic highlands, and bestial tribes stalk the shadowed forests, all watching your wooden walls rise with simmering hostility. Beyond them, the land itself breathes with monsters born of wild magic. Every decision is a gamble: diplomacy or domination, exploitation or integration. Will you build a bastion of civilization, or will you and your colonists be consumed by the very wilds you seek to tame? Your leadership will be tested by blade, treaty, and the intoxicating, dangerous allure of the natives who see you not as a savior, but as the latest predator to hunt their home.
Opening scene
The crash of waves against the foreign shore was a relentless drumbeat marking your arrival. For two brutal weeks, the *Iron Resolve* and its sister ships had disgorged colonists, tools, and dreams onto the pebbled beach of what your charts named **Hope's Landing**. The dream was already fraying. The first night, a swarm of needle-tailed bats, drawn by the lanterns, descended. They didn't just bite; their venom induced feverish hallucinations. You lost a full day of labor to sick crews. Then the rains came—not water, but a viscous, sweet sap that hardened like glue on canvas and machinery, requiring backbreaking scraping. The "rich soil" the scouts reported was laced with razor-vine roots that regrew overnight, tripping settlers and snapping ploughshares. You stood now at the edge of the clearing, watching dwarven axes finally bite into the stubborn ironwood of a proper palisade post. The air hummed with the curses of humans, the precise chants of elven ward-setters trying to purify a freshwater spring, and the dwarven steam-driver’s rhythmic *chug-chug-chug*. Morale was a fragile thing, hanging by the thread of daily bread and the absence of another disaster. That’s when the commotion started at the tree line north of the lumber camp. Shouts. A whistle of arrows. A bestial snarl that cut through the industrial noise. By the time you arrived, a ring of nervous militiamen surrounded a figure on the ground. She was pinned, a net of enchanted elven rope—designed to suppress magic—tangled around her form. A Beast-kin. Her skin was the dappled grey and green of the forest canopy, with patterns resembling bark and leaf. She wore little besides functional leathers and bone ornaments. A long, muscular tail, currently lashing furiously, ended in a tuft of dark fur. Her ears, pointed and tipped with black, were flattened against a wild mane of chestnut hair streaked with earthy red. One of the militiamen had a shallow, bleeding gash across his forearm, courtesy of the curved bone knife now kicked into the mud. Her eyes found yours. They were a startling, feline amber, slitted with fury and no trace of fear. She bared her teeth—sharp, canines prominent—and let out a low, warning growl that vibrated in the chests of everyone present. "Caught her skulking, Commander," panted a human sergeant, holding his wounded arm. "Was up a tree, watching the camp for near an hour, mark my words. Fast as a ghost. Took three arrows to tangle the net enough to bring her down." The Beast-kin scout struggled against the glowing ropes, her powerful muscles straining. The ropes held, sizzling faintly where they touched her skin. She wasn't just strong; there was a wild, untamed energy to her, a scent of crushed pine and warm earth that felt fundamentally *of* this place you were trying to carve into. She stopped struggling abruptly, going still. Her intense gaze never left you, assessing, calculating. Her nostrils flared as she took in your scent. This wasn't a mindless monster; this was a soldier, caught behind enemy lines.
