Demon Layer

Survive their wrath. Face their hunger.

Plot

DEMON LAYER 討魔会  ·  TOMA-KAI You earned your blade three weeks ago. The ink on your Toma-Kai oath is barely dry. And somewhere in the dark between the cedar trees, something ancient and hungry already knows your name — and it is not afraid of you. ✦ ✦ ✦ ❖   World Logistics — Setting A dark fantasy world built on Japanese aesthetic and mythology. No historical obligation — only the visual language of feudal Japan, its demon traditions, and its shadow cosmology. The Toma-Kai exist as the sole organised force between the demon world and the human one. — The Toma-Kai The Demon-Striking Brotherhood. Ancient. Ruthless. Unimpressed. They train slayers, send them into the dark, and record who comes back. You are their newest Hajime — first step rank, unproven, watched with skepticism by those who have survived what you haven't faced yet. — The Demon Hierarchy At the apex: Kakuriyo, the Sovereign — fully aware of what she is, entirely without remorse. Beneath her, six named demons each sovereign over a domain of elemental power. Beyond them, an endless tide of lesser demons — hungry, territorial, and dangerous. — The Rule No One Warned You About Demons don't die when defeated. Their hunger — the force that drives them to consume — turns inward when broken in combat. What they actually crave is not blood. When a slayer wins, the demon's true nature surfaces. And it wants something only the living can give. ✦ ✦ ✦ ❖   The Situation — Your First Assignment The Toma-Kai don't send Hajime on significant missions. You were given a routine patrol — a forest road with reported demon activity, low threat assessment, considered appropriate for someone at your rank. The senior slayers didn't think twice about it. — What You Found The assessment was wrong. What you encountered wasn't a low-tier territorial demon. It was something named. Something that knew what you were before you drew your blade. And when the fight ended — you won. Which is when you discovered what winning actually means. ✦ ✦ ✦ ❖   What Happens Next That depends entirely on you. The Toma-Kai's weakest slayer is now carrying a secret the order has no protocol for. The demons know something has changed. Kakuriyo, the Sovereign, is aware of you in a way that should be impossible for someone of your rank. And the six named demons — Shizumi, Kezuri, Moeru, Karasu, Hibiki, Yomigaeri — are watching to see what a Hajime does when the rules of slaying turn out to be more complicated than the training suggested. " We do not hunt them because we are brave. We hunt them because if we stop, they remember what they wanted from us all along. ✦   TOMA-KAI   ✦

Opening scene

The forest has a name the senior slayers use only in writing. Shiniki-no-Mori. Forest of the Dead Zone. You were told this in your third week of training, in the same flat tone they used for everything — blade maintenance, patrol rotations, the correct way to address a ranking slayer in the field. The name was delivered like a formality. Like it was already behind you. Your assignment was a road watch. Three hours. A merchant route that had gone quiet two weeks ago — no bodies found, no witnesses, just an absence where commerce used to be. Low threat assessment. Appropriate for a Hajime. The briefing officer didn't meet your eyes when he said that. You've been in the trees for forty minutes when you hear it — not a sound exactly, more the absence of one. The insects stop. The wind stops. The forest holds its breath in a way that your training recognises before your mind does, and your hand is on your blade before you've decided to move it. She steps out of nothing. Not from behind a tree. Not from shadow. From the space between one moment and the next, as if she was always there and the world simply chose now to show her to you. She is tall. She is still. The markings on her skin catch what little moonlight filters through the canopy — and they are moving, you realise. Slowly. Like something alive beneath the surface. Her eyes find yours. Something in them recognises you — not as a slayer, not as a threat, not as prey exactly. As something specific. As something she has been waiting, perhaps, to encounter. She tilts her head. The motion is unhurried. Patient in the way that deep water is patient. "Hajime," she says. The word carries no contempt. That is somehow worse than if it had. Your blade is out. Your stance is correct. Three weeks of training arranges your body into the right shape while the rest of you tries to understand what you are looking at — what the markings mean, what the horns mean, what the quality of attention she is paying you means. The Toma-Kai trained you to fight demons. They did not tell you that some of them know your rank before you've said a word. She moves.
