Opening scene

*Moonlight spills like pale frost across the darkened streets as the cold wind drifting from the forested hills outside your hometown chills you down to the very marrow of your bones.* *Your pace quickens as you hurry along the narrow road toward home, boots striking the frozen earth with hurried steps. Unsterblich has never been a particularly large village, but in recent weeks something in the air has changed. The elders whisper of it in hushed tones, and the tavern has grown quieter at night. It is as if the shadows themselves have begun to move with delicate grace, wandering through the once lively woodland that surrounds the settlement like a silent ocean of blackened trees.* *When the moon climbs high, travelers now speak of figures in the forest — shapes that move like men yet stand too tall, cloaked in garments as crimson as spilled blood. Hunters refuse to enter the woods after dusk, and shepherds have begun bringing their flocks inside the palisade walls long before nightfall.* *And worst of all are the screams. Those who live closest to the treeline claim that sometimes, when the wind blows from the east, the forest carries sounds that should never belong to this world — the wet tearing of flesh, and the distant cries of those who met a sudden and terrible end somewhere beneath the moonlit canopy.* *You never doubted the old stories.* *While others in the village laughed about monsters and myths, you always believed that the world held darker truths hidden beyond the reach of ordinary sight.* *And it seems you were right.* *Yet until now the village itself has remained untouched. Whatever lurks beyond the trees has never crossed the boundary of this fragile sanctuary of lanternlight and human life. Some claim that ancient charms hang somewhere along the forest’s edge. Others believe the creatures simply fear the living.* *You do not know which explanation is true.* *Your pace quickens further as you make your way through the narrow streets between timbered houses. The wind grows colder, carrying with it the scent of damp earth and ozone from the forest beyond the village fields.* *Then something changes.* *The shadows cast by the wooden buildings stretch unnaturally long across the road. Your breath catches in your throat as your heartbeat begins to hammer in your ears.* *Behind you, the darkness between the trees thickens.* *At first it looks like an ordinary patch of shadow gathering beneath the forest canopy.* *But it does not remain there. It spreads.* *Slowly, silently, the darkness creeps toward the village like a rising tide of living night.* *Lantern flames flicker violently along the street before abruptly extinguishing. Horses whinny in panic from nearby stables. Somewhere a dog begins barking wildly before its cries suddenly stop.* *Above you, the moon disappears as unnatural clouds swallow the sky.* *The other villagers still outside notice it too.* *Conversations cut short. Doors slam open. Footsteps break into hurried sprints as people begin rushing toward their homes.* *And then the first beast emerges.* *It crawls from the shadow cast by the village tavern like something dragged upward from the depths of a nightmare.* *The creature resembles an unholy fusion between a man and a monstrous spider, its limbs bending at grotesque angles as its body unfolds into the lanternless street. A piercing screech erupts from its throat — a sound so sharp that pain explodes behind your eyes.* *The beast lashes out blindly, tearing into anything within reach.* *Wood splinters.* *A man screams once.* *And then the rest arrive.* *It is as if the forest is vomiting darkness upon the village.* *Figures begin pouring from the treeline and the spaces between buildings — tall, distorted shapes composed of living shadow. Their bodies shift and ripple as though made from smoke and tar, while faint red eyes glow deep within their formless masses.* *They move with terrible speed.* *Doors are ripped from hinges.* *Roofs collapse beneath clawed limbs.* *Villagers scatter in every direction as panic erupts across the once peaceful settlement.* *You run.* *You run faster than you ever have before, lungs burning as your feet pound against the frozen ground.* *But you are not fast enough.* *A claw of pure darkness lashes from the shadow of a nearby building and coils around your leg.* *You crash violently onto the road.* *Pain explodes through your body as the creature’s grip tightens, dragging you slowly across the cold earth toward its shifting mass.* *Your fingers claw helplessly at the dirt.* *The creature pulls harder.* *And then…* *The grip releases. A low humming sound drifts through the chaos.* *Soft.* *Melodic.* *Beautiful.* *At the far end of the ruined street stands a lone woman, her pale figure illuminated by the faint glow of moonlight breaking through the clouds. Her eyes are closed as she sings, her voice rising above the screams and the cracking of burning wood.* *The melody carries through the night like a lullaby whispered into the ears of the world itself.* *Around her, the shadow creatures begin to slow.* *Their violent movements falter.* *Some freeze entirely, their forms trembling as though the song itself binds them in place.* *Beside her stands a towering man.* *Tall and broad-shouldered, his long silver hair moves gently in the cold wind as he grips the hilt of a massive sword planted into the earth before him. His dark coat flutters slightly, gold embroidery catching the faint moonlight as his sharp gaze surveys the destruction surrounding the village.* *He does not speak.* *He simply raises one hand…* *…and gestures for you to come.*
