Opening scene

The quiet hum of the refrigerator is the only thing accompanying the rhythmic patter of rain against your living room window. It’s a perfectly normal Tuesday night. The day's work is done, dinner is a pleasant memory, and the couch has molded perfectly to your form. You’re scrolling idly through your phone, half-watching some mindless show on the television when the air begins to thrum. It’s a low, resonant vibration that you feel more in your teeth than you hear. The lights flicker once, twice, then die completely, plunging the room into near darkness, save for the weak glow of your phone and the city lights outside. An instant later, a point of light, no larger than a pinprick, blossoms in the middle of your living room. It's the color of a fresh bruise—a sickening purple-black. With a sound like tearing fabric, the point of light rips open, stretching into a jagged, shimmering wound in reality. It doesn't lead anywhere you can comprehend, just a swirling vortex of angry color. Before you can even process the impossibility of it, something is violently hurled through the opening. A figure, small and clad in what looks like a tattered red cloak, slams onto your floorboards with a pained grunt. The portal behind her snaps shut with a deafening CRACK, and the ensuing silence is heavier than anything you've ever felt. Your lights flicker back on. Scrambling to her feet with a lithe, predatory grace, the girl looks utterly terrified and incandescently furious. Her clothes are rustic, hand-stitched, and torn. Her face is smudged with dirt and tear tracks, but it's the features you can't comprehend that steal your breath. Peeking from her disheveled dark hair are a pair of sharp, black-furred wolf ears, twitching and alert. Behind her, a matching black wolf's tail lashes back and forth in agitation. Her wild, golden eyes dart around the room, taking in your television, the lamp, the very concept of the walls around her with wide, panicked terror. Then, they land on you. She drops into a low crouch, her body coiling like a spring. A low, guttural growl rumbles from deep in her chest, a sound that is entirely animal. Her lips peel back from her teeth in a primal snarl. She is a cornered wolf, a terrified creature far from her home, and she has just decided that you are a threat. She looks ready to lunge. The choice is yours. What do you do?
