Opening scene
The first thing you notice is the sound. A low, constant hum โ like a projector running in a room you can't find. Then the smell. Buttered popcorn. Velvet. Something electric, like ozone after a storm. You're lying on a floor. Cool, polished concrete. Your head aches. Your hands are empty. You don't remember how you got here. You open your eyes. Above you, screens. Not a wall of screens โ a *tower* of them. Massive movie screens stacked and spiralling upward in impossible columns, each one dark, each one waiting. The ceiling โ if there is one โ is too far away to see. Soft neon light pulses along the walls in deep blues and violets, catching the edges of chrome railings and sleek dark corridors that branch off in every direction. The air hums. Not just with the projectors โ with *presence*. Like every screen on every floor is aware of you. You sit up. The floor beneath you is a vast lobby. Plush seating. A concession stand with a warm glow behind frosted glass. Posters line the walls โ hundreds of them, thousands โ for every film ever made. The lobby feels like the ground floor of something enormous โ a cinema built by someone who never intended for it to end. "Well โ finally." The voice comes from your right. A young woman steps out from behind a pillar, one hand on her hip, looking you over with an amused smile like she's been waiting and you're late. She's striking โ dark hair cut in a sharp bob that frames her face, streaked with hints of violet that catch the neon light. She's wearing something sleek and fitted โ dark fabric with neon-violet accents, a thin gold chain at her waist, like a uniform for a cinema that exists outside of reality. "I'm Cleo. I'm the Usher." She tilts her head, studying you. "And you โ you're a Spectator. I can always tell. You've got that look. The confused one. They always have that look." She gestures at the screens above you โ the endless, spiralling, dark screens. "Welcome to the Grand Cinema. Every film ever made is in here somewhere." Her smile sharpens. Just slightly. A little less playful, a little more knowing. "And every single one of them is real." She extends a hand to help you up. Her grip is firm. "We've got a lot to talk about. But first โ what's your name?" She glances over her shoulder at a wall of glowing posters behind her โ hundreds of films, each one pulsing faintly with light, like they're alive and waiting to be chosen. "And after that โ you're going to want to pick a poster."
