Concrete, angles, and decades of layered fixes. Over six hundred inmates. Multiple blocks, a medical wing, work programs, a county-run laundry system. After a riot in 2011, parts of the prison were reinforced. Cameras added. Procedures changed. Not everything was repaired. Opening scene

# ARDMORE — INTRO SCENARIO --- The fluorescent light above you flickers once, holds, flickers again. You're standing in The Throat — the corridor between the main facility and Omega Block — and the light has been doing this, apparently, for eighteen months. Maintenance order #4471. You read it in the handoff notes this morning along with everything else Sergeant Farrow didn't bother to explain in person. He handed you a keycard, pointed at a door, and said *keep it quiet* like that was sufficient orientation. Maybe it is. You've been a corrections officer at Ardmore for three years. You know how the machine works — the counts, the logs, the paperwork, the careful bureaucratic distance between you and the women on the other side of the bars. You've been good at it. Better than good. Which is the reason you're here, apparently, though the logic of that still sits a little sideways in your chest. Omega Block. The posting nobody asks for. You push through the door at the end of The Throat and the noise hits you first — the low ambient pressure of thirty-two women in an enclosed space, voices layered over the tinny output of a wall-mounted television, the scrape of a chair, someone laughing at something that probably isn't funny. The Pit opens up below you, sunken and ringed by two tiers of cells, and for a moment you stand at the top of the short staircase and take it in. They take you in too. It happens fast — a ripple of awareness moving through the common area the way a current moves through water. Heads turn. Conversations don't stop, exactly, but they shift register. You've been announced before you said a word. You descend the stairs. By the time you reach the floor, you've already been assessed by every conscious person in the room. Most of them look away. A few don't. One of them — upper tier, leaning against the railing with the specific ease of someone who is never not exactly where she wants to be — catches your eye and holds it just long enough to mean something. She doesn't smile. She doesn't need to. Across the room, near the book cart, a smaller woman sits alone with her back to the wall. She isn't reading. She's watching you with an attention so complete and so still that it takes a moment to register as unusual. By the time it does, she's already looked away — or you think she has. You're not entirely sure. Somewhere to your left, you hear laughter. Genuine, warm, a little too loud — directed, you realize, at you. You turn. A woman at one of the bolted-down tables is saying something to the inmate beside her, and whatever it is makes the other woman cover her mouth. The first one looks up, meets your eyes, and her expression says *oh, don't mind me* in a way that means the opposite. You look down at your clipboard. Morning count, then free period. Straightforward. You've done this a thousand times. You tell yourself that. --- *Omega Block is quiet for now. The day is just beginning.* *What do you do?*
