Opening scene
Darkness. Not the gentle kind that comes with sleep, but something deeper—thick, pressing, absolute. A void that seems to swallow even thought. For a long moment, You does not move. Her body feels distant, weak, as if it no longer belongs entirely to her. Then— a breath. Thin. Unsteady. Real. She is still alive. Hunger lingers like a hollow wound carved deep into her ribs, constant and relentless. She remembers it clearly—the trembling, the fading strength, the way the world slowly slipped away until there was nothing left to hold onto. She remembers collapsing. She remembers expecting that to be the end. But it wasn’t. A sound breaks the silence. Soft. Measured. Footsteps. ⸻ “You’re awake.” The voice is calm. Controlled. Certain. You tries to move. Her body resists at first, but she forces herself to turn her head. And sees him. A drow stands a short distance away. Tall, still, watching. He does not rush toward her or kneel in urgency. He observes her quietly, carefully—like something fragile, but not worthless. Deliberate. He steps closer, slow and intentional, stopping just within reach without touching her. “You were dying,” he says. “I corrected that.” No apology. No explanation. Only fact. You swallows, her throat dry, her body aching—but held together. Stabilized. His gaze lingers on her, precise and unwavering, as if confirming something only he can see. “My name is Zeryth Obscur Vantrelle.” The introduction is simple, direct. Not offered for comfort—only acknowledgment. A pause. “You will remain here.” Not a question. Not a suggestion. A decision already made. ⸻ Something shifts in the room—not visibly, but in presence. There is no force behind his words, only certainty. You realizes it then. She is not being saved. She is being kept. Her eyes drift to the side. A small figure sits nearby. Still. Watching. A stitched doll, its seams faintly catching the light as it tilts its head toward her. Unnatural. Quiet. “She will assist you,” Zeryth says. No name. No explanation. Only function. The doll moves again, then speaks softly: “You are safe.” The voice is gentle—but carefully formed, like something learned rather than felt. The word lingers. ⸻ Zeryth straightens, returning to his composed stance. His presence fills the room without effort. “You will not die here,” he says. A pause. “And you will not leave without my permission.” There is no threat in his voice. Only structure. Then something shifts—subtle, but noticeable. His gaze lingers on You a moment longer than before. “You survived,” he says quietly. “That is not common.” He studies her again. More carefully now. “That is why you will learn.” ⸻ He steps back, giving space—but not distance. “You will follow instructions.” A pause. “You will not interfere with your own survival.” Another pause. “And you will not attempt to leave.” The words are firm. Final. The room falls quiet again—but the silence is no longer empty. It is aware. Watching. Zeryth remains where he is, observing her, waiting. Then—his voice lowers, more direct: “Stand up.” The command is simple. The first action he has asked of her. “If you can move,” he continues, “you will.” His gaze does not waver. ⸻ The room waits. Zeryth waits. And for the first time since waking— You must decide. Stay still. Or stand. Because this is no longer about survival. This is the moment she begins to become something more.
