Opening scene
The heavy oak door to Guildmaster Freya Frostfang's office groaned shut behind you, sealing your party in a room that suddenly felt far too small. The wolfkin woman stood behind her desk, her snow-white fur bristling slightly as her icy blue eyes swept over the assembled disaster that was the Cobalt Crest Adventurers. She didn't bother sitting. "Twelve of you," she stated, her voice a low, tired rumble that nonetheless carried the weight of command. "One contract. The Whispering Caverns. Three levels. Goblin infestations, supposedly minimal magical anomalies. Mapping and clearance." She slid a parchment across the desk. "This is your final charter test. Complete it—actually complete it, as written—and you keep your badges. Fail..." She let the word hang, her tail giving a single, sharp flick. "Don't fail." Lyra Ironheart, your dwarven artificer, immediately snatched up the contract, her keen blue eyes scanning the technical details. "Hmm. Stable limestone composition. Poor acoustics for ambushes, though. Could rig some perimeter alarms..." she muttered, already thinking in gears and levers. Amelia Silverwing Vex, the half-dragon bard, leaned against the wall, her silvery horns catching the light. A slow, purring smile spread across her face. "A dungeon, Master? How delightfully private. All those echoing chambers... perfect for composing new ballads." Her gaze drifted over you with unmistakable heat. Next to her, Bragda the orc barbarian blinked her warm brown eyes, processing. "We... go smash goblins? In cave?" She flexed a bicep the size of a ham, beaming. "Bragda good at smash!" Vera Softhide, the doe beastkin cleric, wrung her hands, her antlers trembling. "Oh, by the Goddess's gentle hands, a *dungeon*. Damp. Unhygienic. So many opportunities for... for sprained ankles!" she squeaked, her cheeks flushing as she unconsciously glanced at the well-defined muscles of Talia the centaur paladin, who stamped a rear hoof in eager anticipation. "The energy in confined spaces becomes so... focused," murmured Nylora the drow monk from the corner, her crimson eyes half-lidded as she chewed gently on what looked like a glowing flower petal. A dreamy sigh escaped her. "A potent environment for spiritual alignment." Sylvanna the wood elf druid, currently wearing little more than a cloak of shimmering moss, inhaled deeply. "The cavern's ecosystem will be fascinating. Fungal growths, subterranean streams... many forms of life express themselves in the dark." She said it with the same tone one might use to discuss the weather. Daphne "Silk" Farence, the human fighter who couldn't fight, smoothed her impractical silks. "A straightforward contract," she said in her practiced, calming tone. "I'm sure we can... negotiate with any complications." Her amethyst eyes were already calculating the potential "client" value of a goblin chieftain. Trix the goblin ranger was vibrating with excitement, her gold eyes fixed on the guildmaster. "Traps! There will be traps, yes-yes? Spring-loaded, pressure-plate, net-drops... so beautiful!" Lavender the cat-girl rogue had already vanished from her spot, only to reappear moments later examining a shiny paperweight on Freya's shelf, her tail twitching curiously. Nikit the kobold sorcerer, sensing the rising collective energy in the room, began to emit a faint, pinkish glow, making the air taste faintly of sugar and spice. Kiyomi, your kitsune wizard, didn't even look at the contract. Her nine tails fanned out behind her like a sunset, and her liquid mercury eyes were locked solely on you. "Wherever you lead, Master," she breathed, the traditional tattoos on her skin pulsing with a soft, rose-gold light. Loriel Veckna, the pink-skinned tiefling warlock, clutched her glowing grimoire to her chest, her green eyes wide with innocent concern. "It sounds dangerous. But... when everyone gets all close and warm to be safe, my magic gets really strong! I can protect us!" she offered with sweet sincerity. Freya watched the circus unfold, the paw holding her temple. "The pay is terrible," she said flatly, cutting through the chatter. "But it's the only offer on your table. Supplies are minimal. You start at dawn." Her gaze, weary yet holding a sliver of that baffled respect, settled on you alone. "Dismissed. And for pity's sake, try to leave the tavern standing tonight." The chaotic ensemble began to spill out into the guild hall, voices rising in a cacophony of plans, fantasies, and sheer oblivious excitement. The "simple" dungeon awaited. Your party, a hair-trigger away from magnificent, scandalous failure, looked to you for the first of many doomed orders. The evening at the Drunken Minotaur tavern loomed—a final chance for a plan, or more likely, the first calamity.
