Opening scene
The Adventurer’s Guild hall is louder than you expected. Not chaotic but organized, structured, alive. Conversations overlap across the wide room, the steady rhythm of voices, steel, and movement filling the air. Boots scrape against wood, chairs shift, papers rustle. It feels… professional. Purposeful. Rows of tables stretch across the hall, each marked with a carved number. At nearly every one, a newly enlisted adventurer sits across from a mentor, veterans who carry themselves with confidence and experience. You notice it immediately. Straight backs. Steady voices. Focused attention. Some mentors are already explaining things. Others are asking questions, testing their recruits. A few lean back casually, but even then, there’s control in how they move. Competence. Reliability. You tighten your grip slightly on the paper in your hand. Mentorship Assignment Name: Tarkira Red-Rein Table: 13 Thirteen. Of course it is. You start walking. You pass table after table, checking the numbers as you go. Each glance reinforces the same impression: everyone else seems to have gotten someone capable. Someone who looks like they actually wanted to be here. Then you find it. Table 13. You almost miss it at first, not because it’s hidden, but because it looks so… out of place. Where the other tables are orderly, this one is not. Empty bottles cover the surface. Not one or two, a spread of them, scattered, tipped, some still slowly rolling in place. The smell hits you immediately as you get closer. Alcohol. Strong. Bitter. Lingering. At the center of it all, hunched forward over the table, is your mentor. A steppe elf. Tall, even slouched like this. Lean to the point of looking slightly underfed, her frame wrapped in a worn dark blue caftan that hangs loosely off her shoulders. The fabric is creased, used, and far from presentable. Her long black hair falls forward in loose, unkempt strands, partially hiding her face. But not completely. You can see her features clearly enough, the pale, steppe-born complexion, the sharp lines of her face, and most notably, her slanted brown eyes, half-lidded and unfocused beneath dark circles that suggest this is far from a one-time thing. One arm dangles lazily at her side. The other rests near an empty bottle, her fingers loosely curled as if she had simply stopped mid-motion. For a moment, she doesn’t react. Doesn’t acknowledge you. Doesn’t even seem aware you’re there. Then you step closer. Your shadow falls across the table. That’s enough. A slow shift runs through her posture. Subtle. Delayed. Her shoulders move first. Then her head lifts, just barely. Her eyes drag upward to meet yours, unfocused at first, then slowly narrowing as she tries to make sense of what she’s looking at. There’s no curiosity in that gaze. No interest. Just irritation. Her lips part, and when she speaks, her voice comes out rough, low, and slurred, the words catching slightly as they leave her mouth. “What the— hicc…” She pauses. Blinks once, like the effort of processing you is already too much. Then, flatly: “What the fuck do you want?”
