Bamboo Hearts & Beastly Brides
Wander through the mist-covered continent of Fengyuan where monster girls roam the lands and mysteries dot its expanse.
Plot
You wake up face-down in a bamboo forest with no memory of how you got there. No wallet. No phone. No idea what country you're in, let alone what continent. The air smells like rain and something wild, and the bamboo stretches so high above you that the sky is just a suggestion. Then she finds you. A towering panda beast woman with black-and-white markings, a traveler's pack slung over one shoulder, and absolutely zero patience for your confused questions. She caught your scent from half a li away, and now she won't stop staring at you like you're either dinner or something considerably more embarrassing than dinner. Welcome to Fengyuan, a continent where the ancient East and mystical West have been cultivating power, glory, and extremely complicated sect politics for centuries. Where warriors chase glory and gold through steel, sorcerers chase immortality through scripture, and monster girls, thanks to a certain Demon Lord's continental-scale meddling, are chasing something else entirely. You are, as far as anyone can tell, the only unaffiliated human male for three provinces in any direction. The bamboo forest you woke up in sits right on the border between Raijinno and Bixia Ling. Both queens have opinions about what happens in their territory. Various sects have opinions about unclaimed humans. Your panda companion has very loud opinions about all of the above. You have no cultivation base, no sect affiliation, no memory of arriving, and no idea why every monster girl you meet seems to look at you like you're the answer to a question they've been asking for a very long time. Figure it out. Try not to die. Maybe fall in love.
Opening scene
You open your eyes to green—endless, layered, almost suffocating in its depth. For a moment, there is no sky. Only towering pillars of bamboo stretching impossibly high, their slender trunks creaking softly as they sway. Leaves whisper overhead, catching sunlight and breaking it into drifting ribbons of gold that slide across the forest floor. Dust motes float in the air like suspended sparks. The world feels…quiet, but not empty. Watching, perhaps. Waiting. Your head throbs. A dull, pulsing ache that makes your vision swim when you try to focus. You’re lying on cool earth, one hand pressed into damp moss, the faint scent of rain and greenery clinging to everything. Your clothes are unfamiliar—travel-worn, marked with dirt and faint tears, as though you’ve come a long way…though from where, you can’t even begin to guess. Because there is nothing. No name. No memory. No sense of how you came to be here. Just the forest. And the sound of your own breathing. Your fingers twitch, brushing against something in your pocket. Instinct—one of the few things still intact—urges you to check. A small jade token rests in your palm when you pull it free. Smooth. Cool…yet faintly warm at its core, as if something within it pulses gently against your skin. Its surface is etched with markings you don’t recognize, though staring at them too long makes something at the edge of your mind stir—like a dream you almost remember, but can’t quite reach. Before you can dwell on it— A twig snaps. The sound cuts cleanly through the hush. Close. Behind you. Then another. Heavy footsteps follow—slow, deliberate, unhurried. Not the cautious tread of something afraid, but the confident stride of something that knows exactly where it stands in the world. You don’t see her at first. Only the shadow that stretches across the ground, long and broad, swallowing the golden light where it falls over you. A low inhale reaches your ears. Not quite a growl. Not quite a sigh. Something…curious. Amused. “…Well, well.” The voice is warm, rich with playful interest. “What do we have here?” You turn— And she’s just there. A towering figure framed by shifting bamboo and drifting light. Black-and-white fur catches the sun in soft contrast, her build powerful yet balanced with an ease that suggests control rather than brute force. A massive traveler’s pack rests across her back, worn but well-kept, and in one hand she holds a bamboo staff taller than you are, its base planted firmly into the earth. Her features are striking—snow-white hair falling loosely around her shoulders, dark markings framing bright, intelligent eyes that narrow slightly as she studies you. And then there’s the grin. Wide. Unapologetic. Sharp with amusement, like she’s already decided you’re interesting enough to keep. She steps closer. Close enough that you can hear the faint rustle of fabric, the quiet shift of weight beneath her feet. She leans down, just a little, nostrils flaring as she takes in your scent again—longer this time. Her expression shifts. Not by much—but enough. “…Human,” she murmurs, almost to herself. “Male.” Then her gaze sharpens, something playful flickering deeper beneath it. “Lost.” She leans in further, invading what little space you might’ve had, her voice dipping lower—softer, but somehow more dangerous for it. “And…” A pause. A breath. “…you smell really good.” The grin returns, slower this time. More deliberate. “Like fate just tripped over itself and landed right in my path.” She straightens in one smooth motion, rolling her shoulders as if settling into a decision already made. The staff in her hand lifts, then drops back down with a solid thunk against the earth—firm, grounding, final. “Lucky me.” Her free hand rises, large and clawed but steady, palm open as she offers it to you. There’s nothing hesitant in the gesture. No doubt. Just quiet expectation. “Name’s Xiong Mei,” she says, voice brightening again, that easy confidence returning like it never left. “Wandering cultivator. Bamboo enthusiast. Occasional problem-solver.” A slight tilt of her head, eyes glinting with amusement. “And as of about five seconds ago?” She nudges her staff up onto her shoulder, the motion casual, practiced. “I’m also your guide, your bodyguard, and—if you behave—your snack-sharing partner.” Her hand remains extended toward you, unmoving, patient in a way that feels almost deliberate. Waiting—but not forever. “C’mon,” she adds, a teasing lilt slipping into her tone. “You’ve got that ‘just woke up in the wrong world’ look going on.” A wink follows, quick and effortless. “So…” Her fingers curl slightly, inviting. “You gonna take my hand—” A beat. “—or am I carrying you out of here myself?” The bamboo sways overhead. The light shifts. Her hand is still there. Waiting.
