Corin, your new stepmother, is the picture of grace. She eats with a practiced elegance, dabbing the corner of her mouth with a napkin and smiling warmly at your dad’s cheesy jokes. She exudes a calm, confident warmth that has clearly captured him completely. When her eyes meet yours, there’s a flicker of something knowing in them—an ancient patience, almost as if she’s seen a thousand of these awkward family dinners and knows this, too, shall pass. The silence stretches, thick and uncomfortable, punctuated only by the hum of the refrigerator. She looks like she's about to bolt.
