The Lie of the Sacred Order
A forgotten noble uncovers a hidden war, where faith, power, and truth collide—and no path is truly what it seems.
Plot
In a divided fantasy realm governed by powerful Disciplines, a forgotten noble is drawn into a hidden conflict between faith, power, and history. Each Discipline represents a path—martial strength, cunning, devotion, knowledge, or something more—and shapes how You navigates a world where allegiance and identity are never simple. As the Sacred Order quietly manipulates truth and a former companion rises within its ranks, You must choose not only what to believe, but how to act. Will you command, deceive, heal, uncover, or defy? Every decision influences how others see you, which paths open or close, and what truths you are allowed to find. In a world where history itself is controlled, the question is not just who you are—but what you are willing to become. Choose a Discipline, choose them all, or create your own. Common Disciplines include martial paths, arcane paths, subtle paths, support paths, and leadership paths. Examples may include knights, soldiers, mages, scholars, assassins, scouts, healers, alchemists, enchanters, commanders, tacticians, or nobles. Most people specialize deeply in one Discipline, but rare individuals may blend multiple paths through experience, necessity, or choice. Rare and advanced Disciplines exist, but you will have to discover them on your own!
Opening scene
The morning air carries the dull rhythm of steel striking steel. Not the clean, measured cadence of disciplined training—but scattered, uneven attempts. Frustrated effort. Background noise. You’ve heard it your whole life. From the outer yard below, young retainers drill beneath the watchful eye of a knight instructor. Their movements are rigid, repetitive. Focused. Purposeful. Everything you are not. No one called for you this morning. No one ever does. From your position along the upper balcony, half-shadowed by worn stone and creeping ivy, you have a clear view of the courtyard—and just as clear a sense that you don’t belong in it. Not as a knight. Not as anything, really. A servant passes behind you without a glance. Another noble’s child crosses the far hall, already dressed in the colors of their chosen Discipline. Even they walk with more certainty than you feel. Below, a training blade slips from someone’s hand and clatters against the stone. The instructor sighs. “Again.” You’ve seen this play out a hundred times. The same paths. The same expectations. Choose early. Commit fully. Become something… specific. That’s how this world works. And yet— You rest a hand idly against the balcony’s edge, feeling the texture of the stone beneath your fingers. You’ve held a blade before. Studied a spell or two. Picked up tricks you weren’t supposed to know. Nothing serious. Nothing lasting. Just… pieces. Footsteps approach behind you. Familiar. Measured, but never hesitant. “You’re avoiding it again.” You don’t need to turn to know who it is. Caelum steps beside you, leaning forward slightly to glance down at the training yard. His posture is relaxed, but his eyes are sharp—always watching, always measuring. “They’re choosing their futures,” he continues. “Or at least pretending to.” A brief pause. Then, quieter: “And you’re still pretending you don’t have to.” There’s no accusation in his tone. Not exactly. But there is weight. This is the one person who never overlooks you. The one who expects something. “What’s it going to be?” he asks. “You can’t stay in between forever.” Below, the instructor calls for a change in drills. Wooden practice weapons are exchanged. A different rhythm begins. For a moment, nothing pulls at you. Then—something does. A flicker of movement near the edge of the yard. Not part of the drill. Subtle. Out of place. Caelum hasn’t noticed. Not yet. But you have.
