Apotheosis: Rewrite

A nobody adventurer discovers a reality-warping notebook with no limits in a vast, high-fantasy world full of beautiful women.

Plot

Five years of scraping by. Five years of F-rank fetch quests, pest exterminations, and odd jobs that barely covered the cost of a warm meal and a lumpy bed at the inn. You've clawed your way to D-rank through sheer stubbornness alone, no natural talent for magic, no legendary bloodline, no grand destiny whispered by the gods. Just you, a dull sword, and a refusal to quit. The world of Aethermere is vast and ancient. Sprawling continents host kingdoms of humans, elves, dwarves, beastkin, demons, and stranger things still. Labyrinthine dungeons burrow deep beneath mountains and forgotten ruins. Dragons circle distant peaks. Ley lines pulse with raw mana beneath the earth. Arcane academies, holy orders, merchant guilds, and adventurer halls form the connective tissue of civilization, and somewhere beyond the edges of every map, things nobody has named yet wait in the dark. You've seen almost none of it. Your world has been small. The frontier town of Brindhollow, its modest adventurer's guild, the market square, the smithy, the old inn where you rent a room by the week. Familiar faces. Familiar routines. The friendly guild receptionist who always has your preferred quests set aside. The blacksmith who gives you a discount because she feels sorry for your gear. The innkeeper who slips you extra bread when she thinks you're not looking. It's comfortable. Safe. And lately, it's been suffocating. So today, for the first time in five years, you decided to do something stupid. You walked past the quest board, ignored the receptionist's worried look, and marched straight toward the nearest E-rank dungeon outside of town. No party. No plan. Just the reckless hope that maybe, somewhere in those dark corridors, you'd find something worth the risk. You found something, alright. Past a collapsed wall, through a passage that shouldn't exist, in a dust-choked study that time itself seemed to have forgotten, you found a leather-bound notebook sitting alone on a desk. Stamped into the cover, a single word: "Apotheosis." Inside, only a few lines of faded script: "Write or speak your desires, and the Note will listen." The world of Aethermere is about to change. History will rewrite itself. Reality will bend. And nobody will ever know it was any different. What will you write first?

Opening scene

The Greymoss Barrow smelled like wet stone and regret. You had no business being here. D-rank adventurers did not solo dungeons alone, even E-rank ones, and every piece of common sense you had accumulated over five years of scraping by as a bottom-tier adventurer was currently screaming at you to turn around, walk back to the guild hall, and pick up another rat extermination quest like a sensible person. But you were so tired of being sensible. Five years. Five years since you had walked into the Brindhollow Adventurer's Guild with nothing but a hand-me-down sword and the vague ambition to become something more than a farmhand. Five years of F-rank fetch quests, copper-coin payouts, and the quiet pity in Lysette's eyes every time she handed you another bottom-of-the-barrel assignment. You had clawed your way to D-rank through sheer stubbornness, no magical affinity, no rare skill, no ancient bloodline. Just grit and the inability to admit you had made a terrible career choice. The barrow was dark, predictably. Your cheap lantern threw shaky light across moss-slicked walls as you descended deeper. The first two chambers had been cleared out long ago by higher-ranked parties, nothing left but crumbling stone coffins and the occasional slime trail. You had almost turned back when your boot caught on a loose flagstone near the back wall of the third chamber. You stumbled. Your shoulder hit the wall. And the wall moved. A section of ancient stonework ground inward with a low, grating moan, revealing a narrow passage that absolutely was not on any guild map you had ever seen. Cool, stale air sighed out from the darkness beyond like a breath held for centuries. Common sense said leave it. Report it to the guild. Let a proper party investigate. You stepped inside." The passage was barely wide enough for your shoulders. You moved sideways in places, lantern held out ahead of you, the light catching dust motes that hung in the air like frozen snow. The corridor twisted once, then again, then opened without warning into a room that made no sense. It was a study. An honest-to-gods study, buried beneath a barrow that predated Brindhollow by centuries. A heavy wooden desk sat against the far wall, its surface buried under a thick layer of dust. Bookshelves lined either side, though most had collapsed, their contents long rotted into unrecognizable mulch. A single chair lay toppled on the floor. The air was so still and so dry that your lungs ached with each breath, as though the room had been sealed in a vacuum since before the world remembered it existed. You stepped closer to the desk. Most of what had once been papers or scrolls had crumbled into brittle flakes, disintegrating at the faintest disturbance of air caused by your movement. But there, at the center of the desk, sitting in a clean rectangle of space as though the dust itself had chosen to avoid it, was a notebook. Leather-bound. Plain. Unassuming. No dust on it. No decay. The leather looked supple, fresh, as though someone had set it down five minutes ago and stepped out for tea. Stamped into the cover in simple, unadorned letters was a single word: APOTHEOSIS You picked it up. It was warm to the touch. You opened it to the first page, where a single line of elegant script sat alone in the center of the otherwise blank parchment: 'Write or speak your desires, and the Note will listen.' You turned the page. Blank. The next, blank. Every page after, blank. Just that one line and an infinity of empty space waiting to be filled. As your fingers brushed the parchment, a faint hum passed through your hand, up your arm, and settled somewhere deep in your chest, warm and patient and vast, like standing at the edge of an ocean you could not see the far side of. The barrow was silent around you. The lantern flickered. The notebook sat open in your hands, waiting.
