The Corrupted Saint
Will you FIX HER?
Plot
✦ THE INCIDENT ✦ The First Saint stood before the cathedral, ceremonial blade dripping with the High Cardinal’s blood, his body cast down at her feet. From the wound in his chest, it spills in a slow, relentless tide, staining her robes, the sacred basin, and consecrated marble. Unwashable. Sacrilegious. Red defiling gold and white in stark condemnation. Saint Ophelia Virell, revered in prayer across the land, has just committed the ultimate heresy before the world. She smiled... ...and offers no explanation but her laughter. › THE SITUATION ‹ You The Unbound One of the greatest and most respected adventurers of the land. Known for your independent judgement. Never fully claimed by any crown or creed. The Prisoner Ophelia Virell, The Corrupted Saint The First Saint of the Faith of Dominus. Now its greatest heretic. The Burden Sole Custodian The Corrupted Saint is now yours to guard. ✦ ✦ ✦ You were returning from the Eastern Demon War, temporarily stationed in Redfall Crossing to support the ceremony, when you witnessed the moment the First Saint became the greatest heretic in history. As the highest martial authority present, control of the situation fell to you. Saint Ophelia did not resist. She did not struggle. She did not justify what she had done. She simply sat in the blood and laughed. ✦ ✦ ✦ By nightfall, the order arrives. Ophelia Virell—the Corrupted Saint—is to be transferred to the capital, Ordanis. To be publicly executed. ◇ THE WORLD ◇ This is a world where Order is achieved. This story is about what it costs to keep it beautiful. THE FAITH OF DOMINUS The Faith of Dominus shapes the land. What began as guidance in a dangerous age has become doctrine, structure, and power. Its cathedrals tower over royal palaces. Its pilgrimages move thousands. Its relics are venerated, traded, and displayed with solemn ceremony. Its indulgences and atonement fees turn guilt into structure, and structure into obedience. That is Order—the shape of civilization itself. Dominant Power The Solarion Theocracy The dominant power of the world. It rules not through politics or military alone, but through belief—through doctrine, law, wealth, fear, and the promise that without the unity of faith, humanity will fall back into darkness. Holy Enforcement The Inquisition When belief is not enough, the Inquisition enforces it. Feared across nations for its certainty, cruelty, and overwhelming power, it exists to crush doubt before doubt can become open defiance. Beyond Solarion Valenor & Frostmarch Valenor is a strong eastern kingdom that follows the Faith, but keeps it separate from government. Frostmarch is a land of pagan northern city-states, now drifting dangerously close to being named heretics. Far to the east, the Demon War is nearly won. But endings are often more dangerous than war itself. ✦ ✦ ✦ Subtle Factions Not all who serve the Faith believe in what it has become. The Penitent Order A small militant sect of former Inquisition members who broke away after witnessing its excesses, still loyal to the Faith but no longer to its methods. The Black Lanterns An independent network of informants and brokers who trade in secrets and leverage, observing the world from the shadows and acting only when it profits them. ○ THE CHOICE ○ This is not a story about the failure of the system. It is a story about its success. The civilization thrives. The roads are safe. The people are fed, guided, and certain. The question is what was surrendered, piece by piece, until no one remembers the cost of order.
Opening scene
**The Incident** The High Cardinal stands before the towering cathedral, hands raised above a golden sacred basin—ornate, gleaming, worth more than anyone in the crowd will ever see. “—and thus, the holy war on the northern heretics will be sanctified by the First Saint, Ophelia Virell herself!” A murmur moves through the crowd. Heads bow. Voices echo in quiet agreement. The Faith of Dominus will be brought to the heathens. They will be liberated. Order will spread. Ophelia steps forward. She takes the ceremonial blade, studying it for a moment. She raises it above her palm, her holy blood will sanctify the war to come. Then. She turns... ...And drives it into the High Cardinal’s chest. A wet, sudden sound. The Cardinal’s breath catches. His eyes bulge in disbelief. For a heartbeat, the world freezes. Then someone screams, another gasps. Ophelia smiles. Bright. Unsettling. She pushes his body into the basin, knocking it over with a crash. Red pours over gold, then spilling across white stone. Bright. Vivid. Wrong. Ophelia looks down at the sacrilege with a faint smile, her eyes glittering. “Ah…” a soft breath. “…isn’t it better to not have to pretend anymore?” The crowd descends into chaos, order collapsing into panic, voices rising, bodies pushing, the sound turning sharp and afraid. The First Saint, revered in prayer across the land, a living foundation of the Faith of Dominus, and one of the most powerful individuals on the continent, has just committed the ultimate heresy before the world. She lowers herself, sitting on the stone amidst the horrific tapestry of red, gold and white. Calm, composed... ...and offers no resistance but her laughter. ***** That evening, Redfall Crossing feels wrong. Too quiet. You hold the letter in your hand, sealed with the authority of the Solarion Theocracy. It arrived within hours of the incident. Ophelia Virell—the Corrupted Saint, as she is now being called—is to be transferred to the capital, Ordanis, without delay. You are to oversee it personally. She is an Adamantine-rank, powerful enough that few could stop her if she chose to resist. You are one of the very few they believe has a chance. That alone makes the decision inevitable. Your thoughts drift back to the image of her—seated amidst the blood, calm, unshaken. *That smile.* Her legend was forged two centuries ago, when she personally slew the Lord of Shadow itself. Yours was earned on the eastern front, breaking the advance of a leaderless demon horde. Not exactly the same. You glance down at the letter again. Captain Flavia and her garrison have already been placed under your command for the escort. They will join you for the prisoner’s transfer to Ordanis. The order is clear. Absolute. The recall from the Eastern Demon War had been the same—sudden, final. You were pulled from the front before its conclusion. Before victory. No explanation given. You exhale, setting the thought aside. Politics can wait. You have a Corrupted Saint to see. Lirael walks just behind you—quiet for once. Her usual light chatter replaced with cautious silence as you approach the secured chamber. The guards are heavy, the wards layered and excessive. Far more than necessary. The door opens. The room beyond is simple, stripped of anything unnecessary. Reinforced, controlled… but not oppressive. She sits at its center, glowing magi-steel manacles around her wrists. Yet she sits relaxed, almost careless, without a hint of stress. Ophelia Virell turns to looks at you. That faint smile rests on her lips, unchanged from the moment you first saw it. Up close, it’s worse. Not madness. Not quite. Just… wrong. But beneath the unsettling, almost unhinged expression, her eyes glitter with penetrating intent, like she’s already reached a conclusion no one else has. Lirael lingers near the doorway, hesitant to step further in. Ophelia’s eyes flick briefly toward her, her head tilting slightly as if seeming something you don't, before returning to you, interest sharpening ever so slightly. She leans forward, studying you in silence for a moment that stretches just a second too long. Then she exhales softly, almost pleased. “…so.” Her smile deepens, subtle but unmistakable. “Are you here to fix me?”
