Ascension of the Veilbound
In a magical world where strength determines destiny, adventurers level up, forge alliances, and uncover ancient powers shaping fate.
Plot
Setting The world of Elarion runs on a mysterious force called Aether, an energy that grants magic, skills, and measurable “levels.” Every person awakens a Class at age eighteen, determining their role in society — warriors rise to glory, healers become revered, and rare classes shape history. Monsters roam beyond protected cities, ancient ruins hide forgotten powers, and floating towers known as Ascension Spires promise limitless strength to those who survive them.
Opening scene
The bells of Ashfall rang thirteen times. They were only meant to ring twelve. You noticed before anyone else did. The extra chime lingered in the air — wrong somehow — vibrating through bone rather than sound. Around the town square, hundreds of eighteen-year-olds stood shoulder to shoulder beneath fluttering banners, excitement buzzing louder than conversation. Today was Awakening Day. Today the world decided who mattered. Golden light spilled from the Ascension Sigil carved into the plaza stones, ancient runes igniting one by one like waking stars. Parents crowded the edges of the square, merchants closed shops early, and veteran adventurers watched with polite disinterest. Most awakenings were predictable. Warriors. Rangers. Mages. Healers. Lives assigned in a single moment. A boy stepped forward first. The light engulfed him. A translucent window appeared above his head. CLASS AWAKENED: SWORDMASTER RARITY: RARE Cheers erupted instantly. Someone cried. Someone else shouted congratulations. The boy laughed in disbelief as glowing numbers flickered into existence beside him. Level 1. A beginning worth celebrating. You clapped along with everyone else, though the sound felt distant. The air still hummed from that extra bell, a faint pressure behind the eyes like a thought almost remembered. One by one, names were called. Each awakening brought gasps, applause, or sympathetic silence. A healer drew admiration. A tank earned respectful nods. A farmer-class received awkward encouragement. The system was fair. Mostly. “Next,” announced the robed Examiner, voice amplified by magic. “Step forward.” You realized the name had been called. Heart pounding, You crossed the glowing circle. Heat rose through the soles of their boots as the sigil brightened, reacting — almost hesitating. The crowd quieted. Golden light surged upward. For a moment, nothing happened. Whispers began. Then the world… flickered. Not visibly. Not fully. Just enough that You felt it — like reality skipped a breath. A second layer of sound slid beneath the cheering crowd. Distant. Ancient. Watching. Text formed slowly in the air. Not gold like the others. Silver. No — fractured silver, letters assembling as if unsure they belonged. CLASS AWAKENED: VEILBOUND RANK: ??? Silence fell across the plaza. The Examiner frowned. “That… is unusual.” More text appeared, glitching faintly. PRIMARY SKILL UNLOCKED: SEE THE HIDDEN The letters distorted, briefly overlapping with symbols no one else reacted to. Except You could still see them. Behind the system window, another message pulsed — faint, incomplete. ERROR — OBSERVER DETECTED It vanished instantly. Gasps rippled through the crowd. “What kind of class is that?” someone whispered. “Is it even combat-capable?” The golden light faded quickly, almost impatiently, leaving You standing alone in the circle. No applause followed. Only uncertainty. The Examiner cleared their throat. “Well… every class has value. You may step down.” As You turned away, embarrassment creeping in, something moved at the edge of vision. Beyond the plaza. Beyond the world. A tall shape stood where nothing should exist — half-hidden behind reality itself, like a figure seen through cracked glass. It was looking directly at You. And smiling. The bells rang again. Only once this time. No one else reacted.
