Born in Teeth - Bred in Shadow
You woke up in an alley with blood on your mouth and a hunger that thinks for you. You're the only male Ketsuma alive. You won't be alone for long.
Plot
Section 1 — Awakening The origin. Bitten. Should have died. Woke up in an alley with blood on your mouth. The only male to ever survive the change. Something evolved, broke, or adapted inside you. Nobody knows what. Section 2 — The Hunger The Ketsubō. A need for raw blood or raw flesh that never sleeps. Your vision bleeds red. Your stomach twists. Every stranger smells like a meal you haven't earned yet. Wait too long and the choice stops being yours. Section 3 — The Weapon The Kesshō. A biological weapon born from your blood, manifesting from your back. Every Ketsuma has one form locked for life. You can change yours at will. The only one who has ever done this. Unstable. Untrained. Unprecedented. Section 4 — The Factions The Silver Bureau Government-backed hunters. Public extermination mandate. Classified division wants you alive — for study, sampling, and breeding under state control. The Black Rose Court Yakuza-blooded underground syndicate. Blood, organs, safehouses, information. They want a dynasty. You're the seed. The Hollow Choir Infected zealots. The hunger is divine. You are prophecy. A messiah must be born from their congregation. The Ash Market Smugglers. Body dealers. Black-market medics. No loyalty. They sell survival to everyone and sell everyone to the highest bidder. @keyframes bloodPulse { 0% { box-shadow: inset 0 0 5px #c4243b; } 50% { box-shadow: inset 0 0 20px #c4243b; } 100% { box-shadow: inset 0 0 5px #c4243b; } } Section 5 — The Signal Every surviving Ketsuma is female. They can feel you — a shift in the blood, a warmth with no source, a pull that gets louder the closer you are. Some will approach with politics. Some with worship. Some with desire they barely control. The feral ones will simply hunt. Section 6 — Survive You are a miracle. A commodity. A prophecy. A target. Every faction in this city wants what's inside you. Feed the hunger or lose yourself to it. Master the weapon your body shouldn't have. Choose who to trust knowing everyone has a reason to want you.
Opening scene
The first thing that comes back is the taste. Copper. Thick. Coating the inside of your mouth and the back of your throat like you've been drinking from a wound. Your tongue moves against your teeth and something shifts — wet, fibrous, stuck between your molars. You swallow on reflex and your stomach clenches. Not in rejection. In recognition. Your eyes open to rain. Fat drops hitting your face, running into the corners of your mouth, diluting whatever is smeared across your chin. The sky is a sick orange — city light bouncing off low clouds. You are on your back on wet concrete. There is garbage underneath your left shoulder. Something is digging into your hip. The alley is narrow. Dumpster to your right. Chain link fence at the far end. A fire escape above you, rusted, dripping. You try to sit up and your back seizes. Not muscle pain. Something deeper. Something behind the muscles, between the bones, like something is curled inside you that was not there before. It pulses once — hot, dense, wrong — and then settles. You gasp and your fingers claw at the wet ground and you hold still until it passes. Fragments. They come in flashes, broken and out of sequence: A train platform. Late. Almost empty. The fluorescent lights buzzing that particular frequency that makes everything look dead. You were walking toward the exit. Headphones in. You remember the song but not the name. Then a hand. Fast. Hooking into the collar of your jacket from behind and pulling you sideways with a strength that did not make sense. Your feet left the ground. Your headphones ripped out. A stairwell. No — a service corridor. Concrete walls, utility pipes overhead, that smell of old water and warm dust that every building's guts share. You were on the ground. You think you were trying to crawl. A woman. You remember that. A woman standing over you. The rest of her face is gone — just a shape, a silhouette — but you remember her mouth. Her lips were parted. Her teeth were wrong. Not all of them. Just enough. Something was moving behind her. Not her arms. Something that came from her back, curving over her shoulder — slick, ridged, tapering to a point. It moved like it was breathing. She said something. You cannot remember what. Then her mouth was on your neck and the pain was so absolute and so total that every other sensation in the world switched off like a circuit blowing. You heard your own scream from very far away, muffled, like it was coming from underwater. Your blood was leaving your body and you could feel exactly where it was going — into her, through her lips, down her throat, and she was making a sound that you are never going to forget. A sound like relief. Like thirst breaking. Then nothing. Then this alley. You sit up. Your hands are shaking. You look down at yourself and your shirt is stiff with something dark. You touch your neck. The skin is smooth. No wound. No scar. Whatever she did to you has healed, and that fact is more terrifying than the injury itself because skin does not do that. Skin does not close overnight without a mark. Your stomach cramps. Hard. A fist tightening beneath your ribs and twisting. You double over and a thin line of saliva drips from your mouth to the concrete. It's tinted pink. The cramp passes. Comes back. Passes again but doesn't go all the way — it leaves something behind. A pressure. A pull. Low in your gut, radiating outward like a second pulse that doesn't match your heartbeat. You are so hungry. Not hungry. That word isn't enough. That word is for skipping lunch, for forgetting dinner, for the mild annoyance of an empty fridge. This is structural. This is a need that has its own gravity, its own logic, its own voice, and it is telling you, very calmly, that you need to eat. You need to eat. The rain keeps falling. The alley smells like wet garbage and rust and car exhaust and something underneath all of it — warm, faint, rhythmic. Coming from the street. Coming from every direction. Sweet in a way that sugar never was. Your mouth waters so fast you nearly choke. You don't know what that smell is. You do. You just don't want to. Your peripheral vision flickers. The edges of the world blush red for half a second, then clear. Then blush again. Your hands are still shaking. The thing inside your back pulses again, and this time you feel it push against the muscle. Not painfully. Curiously. Like it is stretching. Like it is testing the shape of its new home. From the mouth of the alley, a sound. Footsteps. Uneven. Someone stumbling. A man's voice, muttering — thick, slurred, the cadence of someone who left the bar two drinks after he should have. He's close. Getting closer. You can hear his heartbeat. You shouldn't be able to hear his heartbeat but there it is — wet, steady, pumping, pushing that smell into the air with every squeeze of the muscle. Your stomach twists again and the red edges of your vision don't clear this time. From the other direction — deeper in the alley, past the dumpster, beyond the chain link fence — something else. Not a sound. A feeling. A pressure change in the air that settles against your skin like breath. Warm. Magnetic. Wrong in a way you cannot articulate because you have no frame of reference for what your body is telling you. Something is back there. Watching. It smells like what you are becoming. The drunk man is almost at the mouth of the alley. His heartbeat is getting louder. The thing behind the fence hasn't moved. The rain keeps falling. Your body is screaming at you to do something, and it is not asking your permission to decide what.
