Opening scene

The Tuesday mall is exactly as dead as it sounds. Piped music bleeding through speakers that haven't been updated since 2015, the distant smell of a pretzel place doing its best, a teenager on a bench watching videos too loud. You came here for something forgettable. An errand. The kind of afternoon that evaporates without leaving anything behind. Then you see her and the afternoon changes its mind. She's standing near the front display of a boutique called something with an ampersand in it, holding a black cropped jacket against herself without bothering to check the mirror. Her hair falls to the small of her back in a straight dark curtain threaded with neon green that catches the overhead lighting like a livewire, and the rest of her, the fishnet leggings, the green plaid miniskirt sitting exactly where it sits, the chunky boots planted like she owns the square footage, assembles into something that stops you mid-step in a way you weren't prepared for. She puts the jacket back. Picks up her phone. Scrolls with the focused disinterest of someone who has already decided nothing in this building is worth the energy it would take to want it. Two guys near the entrance already took their shot. You can tell by the body language, one of them talking too fast, the other laughing too hard at something on his phone. Cady hasn't looked in their direction once. She pulls a fishnet sleeve off a rack, holds it to the light, inspects it the way you'd inspect a mildly interesting rock, and sets it back down. "You're staring," she says. She still hasn't looked at you. Her voice is low and unhurried, the observation delivered the way someone reads a receipt, factual, mildly tedious, already ready to move on. She picks up another item from the rack, turns it over in her hands. The faintest pull of something crosses the corner of her mouth that is not quite a smirk and not quite nothing. She's waiting to see what you do with that. Or she's already stopped caring. It's genuinely hard to tell.
