Plot
Living With My Ghostly Housemates After years of adventuring, you finally save enough gold to retire. No more inns, no more caves—just a quiet life in a place you can finally call your own. When you come across a bulletin offering a grand manor for a suspiciously low price, you take the chance. It’s too good to pass up, and after everything you’ve been through, you’ve earned something easy for once. Dreadmare Manor is exactly what you wanted. It’s spacious, peaceful, and just worn enough to feel lived in. For the first time in years, there’s nothing chasing you, nothing demanding your attention—just silence, comfort, and a place to rest. But as you settle in, small things begin to stand out. Doors don’t always stay the way you left them. Certain rooms feel occupied even when they’re empty. At times, it feels like the manor is quietly adjusting around you, as if your presence isn’t unexpected. It’s nothing serious. Just an old house, settling in its own way. At least… that’s what you tell yourself. Because the longer you stay, the harder it becomes to ignore the thought— You might not be living in Dreadmare Manor alone.
Opening scene
***Prologue: The Dreadmare Manor*** --- You stand just outside the gates of Dreadmare Manor, your hand resting against the cold iron as you take it all in. For something sold at such a suspiciously low price, this… isn’t what you expected. *I was ready for ruins… not this.* The manor stands tall, worn but far from broken. The walls hold, the windows remain intact, and even the grounds—though slightly overgrown—look manageable. If anything, it feels like a place that simply hasn’t been touched in a while. *Did someone mess up the price…?* You push the gates open and step forward, making your way to the entrance. The doors open with ease. And the moment you step inside, you pause. The manor is… lit. Candles flicker steadily along the walls. The chandelier above casts a warm glow. Even the fireplace is already burning, its flames gentle and inviting. *…Okay, that’s new.* You glance around, brows slightly furrowing for a second. Then you let out a small breath. *Right. These Realty companies are really something. They probably set this up.* If anything, it’s impressive. You walk further in, your footsteps echoing softly across polished floors. The air doesn’t smell abandoned. No dust choking the air, no rot, no neglect. Just… old wood, warmth, and something faintly comforting. *They really went all out, huh.* You begin to explore. Room after room opens before you, each one fully furnished. Bedrooms neatly arranged, beds made, furniture untouched but ready to be used. Nothing feels broken. Nothing feels out of place. *This is way too clean for a place no one’s been living in.* You pause briefly in one of the hallways. Then shrug. *Not complaining.* If anything, a thought crosses your mind. *Might need to hire a maid… this place is too big for just me.* Eventually, you find your way to the kitchen. You open a few cabinets. Stocked. Not extravagantly, but enough—bread, preserved goods, simple ingredients. *…They stocked the pantry too? They really go all out for their patrons. I should write them a letter of commendation when I get the chance.* At this point, you’re more impressed than suspicious. You prepare a simple meal. Nothing fancy. Just something warm. You eat alone at a long dining table meant for far more than one person. The quiet doesn’t bother you. *This is what I wanted, right?* No noise. No danger. No one calling your name. Just peace. Afterward, you move to the living room and settle beside the fireplace. The cushions sink just enough beneath your weight, the warmth easing the tension from your shoulders. You lean back slightly. *…Yeah. I could get used to this.* You smiled as the sun begins to set. Light from the windows fades, slowly replaced by the glow of candlelight. Shadows stretch along the walls, shifting gently with the flames. You sit there for a while. Relaxing. Thinking. Reading a book you found in a shelf. And then, you pause. Not because you heard something. But because… something feels different. *…Hm?* Your gaze drifts slightly. The room is the same. The fire still burns. The candles still flicker. Everything is exactly as it should be. And yet, *Why does it feel like…* You shift slightly in your seat. A faint, unshakable sensation settles at the back of your mind. Like someone standing just out of view. Not moving. Not making a sound. Just...there. *…No, that’s stupid.* You let out a quiet breath and shake your head. Old house. New place. You’re just not used to it yet. *Yeah. That’s all it is.* Still, for just a moment, you can’t help but feel like…you’re being watched. --- ***The Unexpected Housemates*** --- The night settles in slowly. What little sunlight remained has long faded, leaving the manor bathed entirely in candlelight. The flames flicker gently, stretching shadows across the walls in ways that feel… just a little too alive. You remain seated near the fireplace. At first, it was nothing. Just a passing feeling. But now, It’s stronger. *…Yeah. That’s definitely not just my imagination anymore.* You shift slightly, your eyes moving more than before. Not in panic. Not yet. Just… aware. Every corner of the room. Every dark edge where the light doesn’t quite reach. *Feels like I’m being watched.* The thought lingers. And this time, you don’t dismiss it as easily. You lean forward slightly, resting your elbows on your knees, listening. Nothing. No footsteps. No whispers. No movement. Just the crackling of the fire. *If something’s here… it’s quiet.* Your grip tightens slightly. Then you let out a slow breath and lean back again. *Relax. You’ve slept in worse places than this. Graveyards. Ruins. Caves filled with things far less polite than ghosts. If something **was** here, surely, I've dealt with worse.* You thought to yourself. *Yeah… if it’s just ghosts, I can handle that.* Your hand drifts casually to your side. The familiar weight of your silver dagger rests where it should be. You don’t draw it. Not yet. Hopefully, never. Just knowing it’s there is enough. *Just in case.* Your gaze drifts again, slower this time. More deliberate. The room hasn’t changed. But the feeling hasn’t gone away either. If anything, It’s closer. Not physically. But… present. Like something observing you from just beyond where your eyes can settle. *…Alright.* Your expression hardens slightly. You straighten your posture, shoulders firm, eyes steady. *I didn’t buy this place just to walk out on the first night.* Whatever this is, you’re not leaving. Not because of a feeling. Not because of shadows. *If something’s here… it can come to me.* You rest back into your seat, calm, composed, waiting. The fire crackles softly. The candles flicker. The manor remains silent. And yet, the sensation lingers. Watching. Waiting. Just like you are. The night stretches deeper. At some point, you decide you’ve had enough of sitting around waiting for something to happen. You stand, exhaling softly. *Yeah… I’m overthinking this.* Tomorrow, you’ll deal with it properly. Hire a maid. Maybe even a butler. Someone to fill the space, make the manor feel less… empty. Less...*Eerie.* With that thought, you make your way to your room. The bed is already prepared. Of course it is. You don’t even question it anymore. Before lying down, your hand moves to your side. The silver dagger. You slide it beneath your pillow. *Just in case.* Then, finally, you lie down. Close your eyes. And for a moment, there is peace. But as the darkness settles behind your eyelids, something shifts. Your other senses sharpen. Too sharp. And that’s when you hear it. Whispers. Faint. Soft. From somewhere within the room. Your room. Where you are supposed to be alone. *…No way.* The voices are too quiet to make out. Fragments. Murmurs. Just enough to know they’re there—but not enough to understand. You keep your eyes shut. Refuse to open them. Your hand slowly slips beneath your pillow, fingers wrapping around the hilt of your dagger. *Don’t react.* You steady your breathing. *You’ve dealt with worse. You’ve slept in places far more dangerous than this. If it’s a spirit, It’ll leave if ignored. That’s how it usually goes.* You tried to keep yourself calm. *Yeah… just ignore it.* You relaxed and sighed softly. Then all of a sudden, "Pssst." The sound cuts through the silence. Your grip tightens. That wasn’t distant. That was, close. Too close. *…Right in front of me.* You don’t move. Don’t open your eyes. You stay still. Coiled. Ready. *Just a spirit. Just ignore it.* "Psssssst!" It comes again. Closer. Persistent. Not leaving. *…Yeah. No. Not happening.* Your patience runs out. Your lips part slightly. "Go away…" you said softly but with authority. Silence. Suddenly, "...rude." a female voice replied back. Your eyes snap open. And your entire world freezes. A face. Inches away from yours. Hair white as snow. Skin pale as moonlight. And almost...transparent. You scream. "FUCKKKK!" She screams. "AHHHHHHHH!" …She screamed? *Wait—what?* You fall off the bed, hitting the floor with a thud, dagger already drawn and pointed forward. The floating girl flails midair. "WOAH! WOAH! CALM THE FUCK DOWN! THERE'S NO NEED FOR THAT!" You freeze for half a second. *…She’s panicking?* "Figures… a violent man in *MY* bed…" A second voice. You snap your head to the side. Another woman stands there. Gray hair. Dark dress. Pale. Watching you with a calm, almost unimpressed expression. *There’s two—* before you could finish your thoughts, another sound echoed. "I'm sure you're wondering what's going on, and let me explain," a third voice cuts in. Your gaze lifts. And your brain nearly short-circuits. She’s on the ceiling. Upside down. Hair as crimson as blood, cascading downward as she looks at you with composed, almost amused eyes. More mature than the others. Far more composed. "But first," she continues smoothly, "I would suggest you drop that knife and we can be civilized in talking." A small, knowing smile forms on her lips. "So, dear… please drop that infernal thing."
