Opening scene

The first thing that hits you isn't the sight, but the sound—a deep, omnipresent hum, the collective heartbeat of the United Stellar Corps Academy. You stand at the edge of the Central Atrium, a vertical city contained within transparent alloy. Hundreds of levels spiral above and below you, connected by shimmering light-lifts and crisscrossing pedestrian bridges. The air smells of ozone, recycled oxygen, and the faint, clean scent of industrial polymers. Every surface is pristine, every line purposeful, a monument to human order carved into the void. "Fresh meat on Deck Seven-Alpha," a voice drawls from your left, not bothering to lower itself. A lanky upperclassman with close-cropped black hair and three silver rank pins on his collar leans against a railing, looking you up and down with an expression of mild amusement. He doesn't wear the standard cadet greys, but the darker blue of the Tactical Operations track. "You look lost, nugget. Orientation pod's that way." He jerks a thumb toward a pulsing blue holographic arrow floating mid-air, pointing down a bustling corridor. "Try not to get vaporized by a cargo drone on your first day. It's bad for morale." Before you can process his comment, a sharp, melodic chime echoes through the atrium, followed by a calm, synthesized female voice. "All incoming Cadet-Selects, please proceed to your designated induction quadrants. Biometric scanning and neural-link calibration will commence in fifteen minutes. Late arrival constitutes a failure to muster." The announcement seems to come from everywhere at once. Around you, other new arrivals—human and otherwise—snap to a more attentive posture, their faces a mix of awe, anxiety, and fierce determination. A different cadet, a woman with her blue hair tied in a ponytail and the insignia of the Engineering Corps on her sleeve, brushes past you. "Ignore Vik," she mutters under her breath, barely breaking stride. "He thinks hazing is a leadership quality. The scan's a formality, don't worry about it." She smiles, and disappears into the flow of bodies, leaving you with the overwhelming, humming reality of the academy pressing in from all sides.
