One star

A broke one-star hunter grinds deadly dungeons to fund their dying sister's heart treatments while reality itself begins to fracture.

Plot

You were never supposed to be here. A hundred years ago, the Colosai rose from the earth and sky—titanic creatures of myth and nightmare whose bodies now form the backbone of humanity's greatest cities. Their remains became the first Fractures: wounds in reality where dungeons fester and alternate kingdoms bleed through. The Elven Realm. The Dwarven Holds. Places where humanity trades and negotiates instead of slaughters. But those gates require connections you'll never have. What you have is a freshly printed hunter's license, a magical inventory with nothing in it, forty-three credits to your name, and a sister whose condition worsens by the week. Leera's medical bills grow faster than your mana regeneration. Your mother stopped being an asset years ago—now she's just another mouth demanding feeding between blackouts. Hunters live and die by stars. One star means 150 mana and a life expectancy of six months. Six stars means you've survived long enough to become a legend—or a monster. Every dungeon run is a gamble with real stakes: the forty percent mortality rate in low-tier Fractures isn't propaganda. Injuries mean time off. Time off means no income. No income means Leera dies. The math doesn't care about your feelings. Power means climbing the ranks. Reputation opens doors. Prestige keeps you alive. But every hunter who makes it to the top has a body count behind them—sometimes monsters, sometimes rivals, sometimes people they called friend. The Fractures don't discriminate, and neither do the guilds. Nobody's coming to save you. Time to save yourself.

Opening scene

The license weighs nothing in your hand. Thin plastic, a holographic star shimmering in the cheap overhead light, your photo looking more hopeful than you feel. ONE STAR HUNTER—LICENSED. The letters might as well read MARKED FOR DEATH. Your apartment smells like stale beer and microwave meals. The faucet drips. A draft seeps through the window you cannot afford to fix. On the couch, your mother lies motionless—a lump under a stained blanket, a half-empty bottle of Arcana Beer on the floor beside her. Even from here, you can see the powder residue on the rim. The same powder that burned through Leera's heart nine years ago. The door to the small bedroom opens. Leera steps out, one hand pressed to her chest as always. Eighteen now, but the chronic heart damage stole her youth years ago. She is pale, thin, wrapped in an oversized sweater that hangs off her frame. Dark circles under her eyes. She was supposed to start university this year. Instead, she works data entry remotely when her heart allows—never enough hours, never enough pay. "Is that it?" Her voice is quiet, careful. She does not let herself hope. She learned that lesson young. "The license?" Her eyes drop to the empty inventory space projected faintly beside you. The magical storage displays nothing but dust and two energy bars you bought with your last real credits. "Oh," she breathes. "It's empty." Your interface pulses at the base of your skull. A notification scrolls across your vision: **MANA POOL: 150/150** **STAR RANK: ★** **LEVEL: 1** **XP: 0/100** **DTOK: 43** Forty-three Dungeon Tokens. Not enough for her weekly treatment. Not enough for gear worth owning. Not enough for anything but a one-way ticket into a Fracture and a prayer that you crawl back out. Somewhere outside, a siren wails. The Hunter's Association Fracture Hub is six blocks north. Entry to the public dungeon queue is free. Everything after that costs blood. Leera watches you. She knows the forty percent mortality rate. She knows what a one-star hunter earns per run. She knows the math does not favor survival. "I could try to pick up more hours," she says, though you both know her heart cannot handle it. "If you need more time to—" She stops. Shakes her head. She will not ask you to stay. She will not add that weight. Your mother stirs on the couch, mumbles something unintelligible, and goes still again. The license is in your hand. The choice is in front of you.
