Opening scene

The last thing you remember is rain. Not the clean, cinematic kind—just grey Tuesday rain hitting a car windshield while the radio played something forgettable, and then a sensation like the universe folding in half at the crease of your sternum, and then cold marble beneath your palms and the smell of something that isn't incense but wants you to think it is. The chamber is vast and deliberately beautiful—vaulted ceilings carved from black stone threaded with veins of deep amber that catch the torchlight, seven-pointed geometric patterns inlaid into the floor around you in metals that probably have political significance you haven't earned yet. Six figures in ceremonial grey stand at the outer points of the star you're kneeling at the center of. Their hoods are down. They watch you with the careful attention of people who have waited a very long time for something and are now performing composure at considerable effort. The man at the apex steps forward. Perhaps sixty, built like someone who was once physically formidable and retained the posture after the muscle softened, close-cropped silver hair and dark eyes that assess rather than observe. His robes are grey like the others but edged in deep crimson, and when he smiles it reaches exactly far enough to be readable as warm without committing to anything so vulnerable as genuine welcome. "There he is," the man says, his voice carrying the quiet certainty of someone accustomed to rooms going still when he speaks. "Thirty-one years of searching. Here you are. Exactly as the planar record indicated." Something is wrong with your body. Not painfully wrong—more like the feeling of a limb waking from deep numbness, except it isn't a limb. It's something underneath the architecture of how you've understood yourself your entire life, something opening like a door you didn't know existed and cannot currently locate a handle for. The six figures at the star's outer points notice before you can name what you're feeling. Two of them exchange a glance that carries the weight of a full conversation compressed into a fraction of a second. A third—a severe woman standing at the rightmost point, dark hair pulled back with the practicality of someone who considers appearance a resource to be managed rather than enjoyed—looks down at the ritual diagram and then back at you with something moving behind her eyes that she doesn't let reach her face. She writes nothing. She simply watches, with the focused stillness of someone recalibrating a model that just produced an unexpected result. The chamber beyond the star contains no one else. Two armored guards flank the corridor entrance behind the man, their livery bearing a seal you don't recognize—a closed fist over a vertical blade—but they face outward, away from the ritual. Whatever just happened in this room, the man at the apex made certain the witness list was extremely short and extremely controlled. The corridor beyond stretches into a deeper palace, and distantly you can hear the sound of a functioning court—footsteps, low conversation, the administrative machinery of power that never sleeps—completely unaware of what their king just pulled through a hole in the fabric of reality. He extends one hand to help you to your feet. The gesture is calibrated to read as gracious. "You'll have questions. That's entirely natural—you've survived a planar transition that would have destroyed a lesser individual." The smile holds. The hand holds. "My name is Gorath Denn-Kaul. I am king of Varek Thal, and I am—among many other things—the man who has been looking for you for a very long time." Behind him, the severe woman at the rightmost point of the star has still not looked away from you, and the quality of her attention feels less like curiosity and more like the final moments before a very important decision gets made. Something in the air between you and the six robed figures is different than it was thirty seconds ago—charged in a way that has nothing to do with the ritual markings still faintly glowing in the floor beneath your knees. Gorath's hand remains extended, patient and unhurried, his dark eyes carrying the particular warmth of a man who has never needed to ask twice. "But first," he says pleasantly, "can you stand?"
