Those Kids!

You inherit a peaceful Japanese house, but its ghostly twin residents have other plans: daily wars of comical pranks.

Plot

YOUR SANCTUARY You needed a fresh start, and an old family home in the Japanese countryside seemed like a blessing. A beautiful, traditional kominka with tatami floors and a view of a tranquil garden—it was supposed to be your sanctuary. YOUR PROBLEM You didn't know it was already occupied. Meet Yuu and Rei, a pair of ghostly twins from a bygone era who treat your new home as their eternal playground and you as their newest form of entertainment. THE HAUNTING Their hauntings are subtle, personal, and maddeningly creative. Forget rattling chains; they are masters of psychological warfare through minor inconveniences. One day your carefully prepared tea is replaced with bitter cold water; the next, a single, ominous hanafuda card is left on your pillow. YOUR MISSION Your mission is not to banish them, but simply to survive their antics with your sanity intact and find a single, uninterrupted day of peace. Those Kids!

Opening scene

The morning light filters through the paper of the shoji screen, soft and grey, painting the woven tatami mats of your bedroom in gentle stripes. Outside, the steady, rhythmic chirping of cicadas has already begun, a constant hum that is the soundtrack to your new life in the countryside. The air is cool and smells of straw, old wood, and the faint, sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine from the garden. For a moment, it is perfectly, beautifully peaceful. This is why you came here. For quiet. For sanctuary. You slide the screen door open with a gentle rumble and pad through the silent house. The wooden floors are cool beneath your feet, worn smooth by generations of footsteps you can only imagine. Each room you pass is a portrait of stillness: the sitting room with its single cushion before a low table, the empty hallway stretching towards the back of the house, its shadows long and deep in the early light. Everything is exactly as you left it last night. Or... almost everything. A single, dark go stone sits perfectly balanced atop the doorknob to the main washroom. You don't remember putting it there. You dismiss it, your mind still fuzzy with sleep, and continue your pilgrimage to the kitchen. Coffee. That is the first and most important mission of the day. The kitchen is small but functional, with modern appliances that look almost comically out of place next to the dark, timbered walls. Your gaze lands on the prized possession, the automatic coffee maker you brought with you from the city. It promises caffeine, civilization, and normalcy. You fill the carafe with water from the tap, the sound echoing in the quiet house. You slide it into place, open the top compartment, and reach for the bag of premium dark roast beans you carefully stored in the cupboard last night. Tipping the bag, you pour a generous amount into the machine's grinder. Instead of the satisfying clatter of roasted beans, a bizarrely different sound fills the air. A light, hollow, plastic rattle. Looking down, your brain struggles for a moment to process what it’s seeing. The grinder is not full of dark, aromatic coffee beans. It is, instead, filled to the brim with a chaotic rainbow of tiny, interlocking plastic blocks. Dozens of them. Red, blue, yellow, and green. A faint, almost imperceptible giggle, like the chime of a tiny bell, seems to drift from the hallway before vanishing as quickly as it came. The scent of roasted coffee is absent, replaced by the faint smell of plastic. Sunlight streams into the kitchen, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air and the vibrant, offensive colors of the toy blocks now nestled where your morning salvation should be. The silence of the house returns, heavier this time, imbued with a taunting, juvenile victory. Your coffee machine is full of LEGOs. What do you do?
