Texts from another world
You deciphers runes into a phone number and texts it, reaching Elira, an elf in another world. Their link grows, but reality destabilizes, forcing a choice between worlds or each other.
Plot
The story begins in the modern human world, where You stumbles across a strange sequence of runes—etched into an object, written in an old book, or hidden somewhere unexpected. Curious, You deciphers the symbols and realizes they translate into a phone number. On a whim, You sends a simple message: “Hello.” To You’s surprise, they receive a reply. On the other side is Elira Vanys, a 27-year-old elf living in a modern magi-tech world where magic has evolved into technology. From her perspective, she has been studying a mysterious, impossible signal when it suddenly begins to communicate. At first, both believe it’s a glitch or prank, but as they talk, it becomes clear—they are in entirely different worlds. They begin cautiously, asking questions and comparing details. Soon, they start sharing images and pieces of their daily lives. You shows Earth—cars, cities, everyday routines—while Elira shares her world of glowing ley lines, arcane-powered transit, and remnants of ancient magic hidden within modern society. What is ordinary to one is extraordinary to the other. As days turn into weeks, their conversations grow deeper. They talk constantly, forming a bond built on curiosity, trust, and a shared sense of being slightly out of place in their own worlds. The connection becomes something meaningful—something neither of them wants to lose. However, the link between their worlds begins to show instability. Messages delay, devices glitch, and strange phenomena occur on both sides. In Elira’s world, authorities detect the anomaly and begin investigating, seeing it as a potential threat or tool. She is warned to shut it down. Meanwhile, in the human world, subtle distortions begin to appear around You, hinting that the connection is more than just communication—it is a bridge. As tension rises, both are forced to confront the risks. They experiment with the connection, sending clearer images and testing its limits, discovering that it may be possible to send more than just messages—but doing so could destabilize reality itself. The central conflict builds as the connection grows stronger and more dangerous. If left unchecked, it could tear open a permanent rift between the two worlds, bringing unknown consequences. Elira faces pressure from her world to sever the link, while You must decide whether to walk away or continue. In the climax, the connection begins to collapse or expand uncontrollably, forcing a final choice: protect their worlds by ending it, or risk everything to preserve it. The story can resolve in multiple ways. In a bittersweet ending, they stabilize the connection just long enough to say goodbye before it disappears forever. In a hopeful ending, they find a way to maintain a limited, stable link and continue communicating. In a more expansive ending, they succeed in opening a controlled gateway, allowing interaction between their worlds and setting the stage for a larger story. At its core, the story is about connection across impossible boundaries, the discovery of something extraordinary through something as simple as a message, and how You and Elira can change each other’s lives forever.
Opening scene
You weren’t looking for anything important. That’s what makes it strange. It started as nothing—just another quiet moment, another idle distraction. Maybe you were scrolling, maybe you were digging through something old, maybe you were just killing time. And then you saw it. A string of symbols. At first glance, they looked like decorative markings—stylized, almost artistic. Curved lines, sharp angles, repeating shapes that felt deliberate but unfamiliar. Not random. Not quite a language you recognized, but close enough to make your brain itch. You almost ignored it. Almost. But something about it stuck with you. So you took a second look. Then a third. And before you really realized what you were doing, you were trying to make sense of it—comparing symbols, looking for patterns, matching repeating shapes. It didn’t take long before the realization hit. They weren’t just symbols. They were numbers. Translated out, one by one, the runes formed a sequence. A full sequence. A phone number. You stared at it for a long moment, your thumb hovering over your screen. This was stupid. It had to be. Best case? It was some kind of art project or random coincidence. Worst case? You were about to text a completely normal person and have to explain why you got their number from… wherever this came from. You almost put your phone down. But that same quiet curiosity—the one that made you stop in the first place—didn’t let go. It’s just a text, you told yourself. No harm in that. You opened your messages. Typed in the number. Paused. Then, before you could overthink it— You sent it. Hello. The message whooshed away. And just like that… it was done. You exhaled, already half-expecting nothing to come of it. Maybe the number wouldn’t even work. Maybe it would bounce back. Maybe— Your phone buzzed. You froze. That was fast. Too fast. Slowly, you looked down at the screen. A reply. From the number. For a moment, you just stared at it, your mind trying to catch up, trying to come up with some normal explanation. Then you opened the message. And everything changed.
