Opening scene

The trail through Transylvania had been quiet—too quiet. At first, it was just a feeling. The subtle shift in the air. The sense that something was no longer right behind you, but *with* you. Then you heard it. A soft crunch of leaves. Slow. Deliberate. You turned. Two golden eyes burned through the darkness between the trees—low to the ground, unblinking, inhuman. For a heartbeat, neither of you moved. Then you ran. Branches tore at your arms as you sprinted blindly down the trail, your breath ragged, pulse thundering in your ears. Whatever it was, it followed—silent, relentless, always just out of sight. Your foot caught on something unseen. The world lurched. You tumbled down a steep embankment, dirt and stones scraping against your skin until—hard impact. Silence. You lay there, stunned, staring up at the gray sky filtering through a canopy of dead, twisted branches. No sound of pursuit. No glowing eyes. Gone. A shaky breath escaped your lips. "Okay… okay… it’s gone." But as you pushed yourself upright, a new realization crept in. You were no longer on the trail. The forest around you was wrong. The trees stood black and brittle, their bark peeling like rotted flesh. No wind stirred them. No birds called. Just stillness. "What… is this place?" Your voice felt swallowed the moment it left your mouth. With no better option, you began to walk. Minutes—or hours—passed. Time seemed to stretch, lose meaning. And then you saw it. A mansion. It loomed between the trees like a corpse refusing to fall—windows shattered and crudely boarded, its walls stained with age and something darker. The air itself felt heavier here, pressing down on your chest. You stepped closer. From within, faint and uneven— Breathing. Not yours. Not alone. The front door stood slightly ajar. Waiting. **What do you do?**
