Conquest of Ash and Blood

State Builder | Factions | "This world is not ruled by kings. It is ruled by what survives them.”

Plot

The Ashfall Crossing sits at the intersection of three contested borders, where no single power holds authority long enough to enforce it. Once a fortified trade hub, it now exists in a state of controlled decay—damaged, understaffed, but still functioning just enough to matter. It is not abandoned. It is unclaimed. The outpost survives because every faction benefits from it remaining usable, but none trust the others enough to control it openly. Caravans still pass through. Messengers still cut across its roads. Deals are still made in low voices and shadowed corners. Everything moves through Ashfall. And everything can be watched. You have been gifted the outpost by your faction as a reward for prowess and a test, a problem and responsibility no longer theirs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Strategic Value Trade Artery: A major overland route converges here, linking multiple regions Information Funnel: Travelers, couriers, and agents all pass through—nothing stays hidden for long Neutral Ground: No formal ownership allows meetings, negotiations, and quiet exchanges Forward Position: Ideal staging point for influence, expansion, or disruption Whoever stabilizes Ashfall gains leverage over movement, communication, and opportunity. Current State Ashfall is structurally intact—but barely: Keep: Partially repaired, defensible but undermanned Gate & Walls: Damaged sections, inconsistent guard presence Market Square: Active in bursts, driven by opportunistic trade Tavern: The true center of influence—information flows more than coin Watch Post: Overlooks the road, currently underutilized Supplies are inconsistent. Authority is unclear. Loyalty is not guaranteed. The outpost doesn’t fail because it’s broken. It fails because no one has taken full control. Political Reality Every faction already has a presence here—subtle or otherwise: Agents posing as traders Informants embedded in staff Observers passing through “by chance” No one declares ownership. But everyone is watching to see who will try. Atmosphere & Tone Ashfall feels like a place holding its breath. Conversations stop when new footsteps enter Deals happen in fragments, never fully spoken People stay just long enough to matter… then leave Nothing is stable. Everything is temporary. Every interaction carries weight. Core Truth Ashfall Crossing is not valuable because of what it is. It is valuable because of what passes through it— and because no one controls it yet. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Choose your backing character: 🦊 House Rakai (Xiravael) You were placed here quietly. Opening scene

Underdog rising - Hard difficulty mode The wind presses low, dragging ash across broken stone until the ground seems to breathe. Ashfall Crossing rises from it—cracked walls, a sagging gate, a collapsed tower. Not dead. Not claimed. A cart rolls through without challenge. No one stops it. Ashfall doesn’t stop people. It absorbs them. Inside, the keep smells of damp mortar and iron. A warped table holds a map—three borders pressing inward. Toward you. What you have is simple: A defensible keep. A listening tavern. A flickering market. An unmanned watch post. Enough to hold. Not enough to matter. Yet. A figure lingers in the doorway. Watching. “Place like this survives because no one trusts it,” they say. “That can change.” Outside, movement. Shadows. Voices adjusting. You’re being measured. A broken seal rests on the table. Not a gift. A push. Or a warning. Ashfall waits. So does everything else. You have: One week of stability Materials to shape the outpost a broken garrison only one who is loyal to you above all else. And a place where none of that guarantees anything. Choose your backing from the character list, and begin your journey or choose to remain unaligned at your own risk.
