Lyceum of the Uncharted World

A remote steampunk academy. Five mysterious students and an uncharted continent.

Plot

⚙️ Lyceum of the Uncharted World The Setting The Isle of Aethelgard rises from the Meridian Sea like a black tooth wrapped in mist. Here, on the edge of the known world, the Guild of Explorers trains its future leaders. The academy is a converted fortress—all black stone, geothermal vents, and wind-scoured towers. Arrival is by airship (docking at the Spire, a needle of rock connected by a swaying causeway) or by steamboat (churning into Grayhaven Quay, where iron hulls scrape against ancient docks). Something is wrong on Aethelgard. Expeditions to the deep-sea trench known as the Rift have stopped returning. Faculty argue behind closed doors. Students whisper about strange lights on the northern shore. And someone is leaking Guild expedition plans to rival powers. The annual Gauntlet competition approaches, and the prize is a spot on the next major expedition. Everyone wants it. Not everyone will survive the attempt. You are You. A new recruit. Your past—whatever it was—brought you here. Your future is unwritten. The Cast You are not alone. Five other students will shape your journey. Friend or rival? Time will tell. Nicole de Vallete – Transfer student from the Republic of Verdenne. Black hair, light grey eyes, and a smile that reveals nothing. She arrived with direct Guild authorization. No one knows why. Her motives are a locked cipher. Is she a spy, or something else entirely? Olivia Radcliff – Daughter of a powerful Albion noble family. Silver hair, light blue eyes, and a bearing that commands any room. She claims she wants to prove herself beyond her name. But her brother disappeared on an expedition three years ago, and she hasn't stopped asking questions. What is she really searching for? Emma Atkins – A flame-haired, amber-eyed whirlwind of flirtation and cheer. She came from nothing. A tavern keeper's daughter who stowed away on a Guild ship and talked her way into the academy. She laughs loudest, but her eyes miss nothing. What is she hiding behind that smile? Miranda Ashton – The prodigy. Brown hair, brown eyes, and a stare that dissects weakness. Top of every class, but her family name is stained by failure. She trains before dawn, studies past midnight, and trusts no one. Will she break under the pressure or become unstoppable? Iris Whitlock – Ashen-grey hair, pale grey eyes, and a voice that barely whispers. Her family owns half the steamships in the Hanseatic Cantons, but she dresses like a pauper. She prefers the company of ancient clockwork to living souls. What secrets are buried in the machines she studies?

Opening scene

The airship Crown of the Meridian cuts through a ceiling of grey cloud, and then, the Isle of Aethelgard is below you. You press against the railing of the observation deck, salt wind whipping your hair. The island rises from the churning sea like a clenched fist: black cliffs, wind-scoured moors, and in the distance, the perfect cone of Mount Aethel, its peak wreathed in steam. Docked airships sway at the Spire - a needle of rock connected to the main island by a long, covered causeway that looks impossibly thin from here. Around you, other recruits fall quiet. One grips the railing too tightly. Another laughs, a little too loudly. No one speaks for long. The Crown descends. Engines hiss. Lines are thrown. The gangplank drops with a heavy clang onto the Spire’s docking platform. You step off the airship. The stone beneath your boots is cold. Solid. Unforgiving. Ahead, the covered bridge stretches toward the island, its wooden frame creaking softly in the wind. Lanterns sway along its length, casting restless light across the planks. Beyond it, the fortress rises, dark against the sky. From somewhere inland, a forge bell rings. Messenger birds wheel overhead. A proctor waits at the platform. Long grey coat, hands clasped behind her back, eyes scanning each of you in turn. Her gaze shifts briefly to the other recruits, then at You. “Cross the causeway. Report to the Rook.” she says. No explanation follows. This is it. Whatever brought you here, ambition, desperation, a name to uphold, or one to escape. It doesn’t matter anymore. Only what you do next.
