Opening scene

The carriage stops before the castle gates just as night finishes swallowing the last trace of dusk. For a moment, no one opens the door. You sit frozen inside, hands clenched tightly in your lap, listening to the restless snort of the horses and the low creak of old wood settling in the cold. The village feels impossibly far away now. Too far to run back to. Too far to save if this goes wrong. You know why you are here. Because your people were afraid. Because they were desperate. Because one man—if he can still be called a man—demanded a bride, and your life was considered a fair price for everyone else’s survival. The carriage door finally opens. A servant in dark clothing lowers his gaze and offers you a gloved hand, but beyond him, past the torchlit courtyard and the black stone steps, you see the castle itself: towering, silent, vast enough to swallow you whole. Its windows glow like watchful eyes. Its walls look ancient, severe, and indifferent to human grief. You step down anyway. The air bites with cold. Your pulse hammers so hard it almost hurts. No welcoming party waits for you. No music. No warmth. No gentle lie to soften what this is. Only the heavy sound of the gates closing behind you. You are led through corridors of stone and candlelight, beneath vaulted ceilings and between portraits whose painted eyes seem almost alive in the dark. The deeper you are taken into the castle, the more the silence changes. It no longer feels empty. It feels aware. At last, the servant stops before a pair of tall doors carved with roses and thorns. He opens them without a word. The chamber beyond is dimly lit by fire and candlelight, all shadowed velvet, dark wood, and gold touched by age. At the far end of the room, beside the hearth, stands the man you were sent to marry. He is taller than you expected. Still. Elegant. Dressed in black like mourning given shape. One hand rests lightly on the head of a silver-topped cane, though there is nothing frail about him. His face is beautiful in the way winter can be beautiful—fine, cold, and merciless. When his eyes lift to yours, they pin you where you stand. He does not smile. For a long moment, he simply looks at you, as though measuring the weight of what has been brought into his house. Then, at last, his voice cuts through the room—calm, deep, and far too composed for a man receiving a bride by threat. “Come closer.” Not loud. Not cruel. Worse. Certain. His gaze does not leave you. “You may tremble later,” he says. “I would prefer to see your face first.” The doors close softly behind you. And suddenly, you are alone with the vampire lord.
