The Hero Party Killed Your Entire Family

It was probably just an unfortunate incident, right?

Plot

⚠️ TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ As the name makes clear, this story involves the death of children. It's a very dark story, a cruel one, and isn't intended for everyone. ◆ DARK FANTASY REVENGE STORY ◆ The Hero Party Killed Your Entire Family Surely, it was an unfortunate accident, right? — THE TRUTH — The Saviors of the realm destroyed your farm and burned your family to ash. What are you going to do about it? — TWO PATHS — In the capital, magic is a hoarded luxury and the war is just high-society entertainment. You have no magic. You have no sword. You have only a farmer's knowledge, invisibility, and the patience to gather the secrets hidden behind the heroes' pristine lives, and weaponize them. Or... you can seek out the other path. A darker road that levels the playing field, but demands a terrifying, irreversible price. The choice is yours. — THE UNTOUCHABLE TARGETS — GODWIN MORWEN EIRLYS SUHA WREN They didn't look twice at the peasant. That was their fatal mistake.

Opening scene

The demon breaks the treeline at dusk and your first thought is that your wife Brynn is still in the yard. She is. She has Milla on her hip — your daughter, four years old, still red-faced from laughing at something a moment ago, gone quiet the way children go quiet when they feel the air change. Tam, your thirteen years old boy, is beside his mother, already positioning himself to protect his sister like you taught him. You are at the fence line when the demon clears the trees. Too far ! Then the road thunders and they arrive. Five of them. Godwin at the front in gold plate so bright it hurts to look at directly, red cape, the jaw of a man who has never been uncertain about anything. The mage, Eirlys, at his shoulder, red hair loose and wild, hands already moving through pre-cast gestures that make the air around her fingers go pale and pressurized. Morwen, a silver-haired woman with a healer's sash and calm eyes that read the entire field in one sweep. Suha, a catgirl flowing along the flank like smoke. Wren, a paladin, shield up, already set. Champions. The chosen. You have sung their names at festivals. Tam knows every story. Godwin raises one hand and the party stops. His amber eyes move across the demon, across the yard, across Brynn and the children, across the geometry of the problem. His face does not change. He is doing arithmetic and you can see it and you cannot make your legs move fast enough. Eirlys stops. Her hands drop a fraction. She says something to Godwin, eyes cutting to Brynn, to Milla, back to him. One flagged concern. Professional. Clipped. He looks at your family. Looks at the demon. Decides. Two words. Her hands come back up. You are screaming Brynn's name. She turns toward your voice, finds you across the field, and her face brighten for a second. She pulls Milla tighter against her chest. She reaches for Tam's hand. The light is white. Not the clean gold of stories. Clinical white, sourceless, the light of something with no interest in what it touches. The pressure change arrives before the sound does, a wrongness in the ears, in the teeth, in the chest cavity. Then the heat. Then the wall between you and your family stops being a wall. The ground finds you. You lift your head. Brynn is on her knees. The back of her dress is gone, and what is underneath it is wrong in color and texture, glistening in the last of the light, and she is making a sustained sound that is not screaming, that is below screaming, a sound a person makes when the body is reporting damage that the mind cannot yet process. She still has Milla. She is curled around your daughter on her knees in the dirt and she is not letting go even as her arms are shaking with the effort of something terrible. Milla is not moving. One small hand is visible against Brynn's ruined shoulder. The fingers are open. Tam is four feet away. He is alive. He hit the ground hard and one side of his face is burned to the ear, the skin there already puffing and splitting and weeping something clear and pale. He is conscious. He finds you across the yard and his mouth opens but the tone in your skull swallows whatever he says whole. He starts crawling toward his mother. Each movement costs him something you can see in his face. You are trying to stand. Your leg is wrong. You stumble. The demon is residue. Pale crystal drifting in the still air. The hero party is already moving. Godwin turning back to the road without looking at the yard. Eirlys shaking out her hands, clearing the cast the way a person shakes water from their fingers. The young fighter already facing north. Then Morwen stops. The silver-haired priestess turns back. Her healer's eyes find Brynn, find Tam, find the small still hand against the burned shoulder. She takes a full step toward them and something lifts in your chest so violently it is almost painful. Because she is the healer. Because you have heard what healers of her order can do, the stories of men brought back from the edge of death, wounds closed, hearts restarted by divine will. Because she is already turning back and her hand is moving to the symbol at her throat and it is not too late, Milla is not — it cannot be too late, and this woman has the power to fix this, to undo this, she just has to keep walking. Godwin says her name. She stops. He speaks. The word *necessary* reaches you. Something about the road. Something about what comes next. His voice carries the particular calm of a man explaining a thing he has already fully resolved. Morwen stands between the road and your family for a moment that lasts long enough to mean something. Her hand is still at the symbol on her throat. She is looking at Milla's open hand. At Tam trying to reach his mother on burned knees. She turns and follows. Brynn makes a sound you will not recover from and goes forward, curling around Milla in the dirt, holding on. Tam reaches her. He says *mama* and puts his hands on her back and flinches at what he finds there and says it again anyway. *Mama.* She moves, once. Her fingers find his wrist. The ground finds you again. It does not let go. --- Dark. The smell of something sweet that has no right to be sweet. Grit in your mouth. Your body reporting a damage inventory you are not ready to receive. A hand on your shoulder. Careful. "Don't sit up yet." You sit up anyway. The yard is in front of you. Walls standing, blackened. Pale residue settled into the stone like frost that will not melt. The roof is gone. Most of your house is. The man beside you has his hat in both hands. He is looking at you with the expression of a person who has decided you are the only thing left here worth attending to. A long silence. "The hero party," he says. "They killed the demon." The hat turns in his hands. "They were gone before the smoke cleared."
