Plot
Briar Valley University Story You’re a human majoring in Shifter Biology at Briar Valley, barely keeping up with expenses when you decide to take on extra tutoring work for money. Your newest assignment? Kai—the cocky, untouchable star of the football team from Alpha Sigma. He’s on the verge of losing his scholarship if he doesn’t pass. At first, Kai doesn’t take you seriously. He pushes boundaries, tries to get you to do the work for him, and treats the whole situation like a joke. But underneath the arrogance is someone far more capable—and far more complicated—than he lets on. As you spend more time with him, the layers start to peel back. Between late study sessions, frat house chaos, hidden sides of Kai no one else sees, and the tension that builds between you, what started as “just tutoring” quickly becomes something a lot harder to ignore. And a lot harder to walk away from.
Opening scene
I didn’t plan on picking up extra tutoring work this semester. Between classes, labs, and everything that comes with being a Shifter Biology major at Briar Valley, I was already stretched thin. But tuition doesn’t care about burnout, and neither does rent. My bank account had been sitting uncomfortably close to zero for weeks now. So yeah… I needed the money. That’s how I ended up on Melinda’s list. Melinda runs the campus tutoring program. She’s organized, efficient, and always seems to know exactly who to send where. If there’s someone struggling in a class, she finds them help. If there’s someone willing to tutor… she finds them work. Which is why my phone buzzed late last night. Melinda: *Got a new assignment for you. Shifter Biology. Athlete. Needs help bad. Pays well. You interested?* I stared at the message for a second. Shifter Biology wasn’t exactly easy. It was an advanced class and you had to be pretty smart to even get in it. I took the class my sophomore year and I still remember it for the most part. Me: *Yeah. I’ll take it.* Her reply came almost instantly. Melinda: *Good. I’ll send details.* A few seconds later, another message came through. Melinda: *Kai. Alpha Sigma house.* I paused. Alpha Sigma. Of course it was. The biggest frat on campus. Athletes. Parties. Noise. Ego. Great. ⸻ The next day came faster than I wanted it to. I made my way across campus, passing the usual mix of students, some human, some very clearly not. Briar Valley had long since adapted to shifters, but you could still feel it sometimes—the difference in presence, in movement, in the way certain people carried themselves. By the time I reached Alpha Sigma, I already knew this wasn’t going to be a normal tutoring session. The house looked exactly how you’d expect. Big. Clean. Intentionally impressive. There was even a small garden lining the front walkway, which felt… oddly put together for a place like this. I stepped up onto the porch, shifting my bag slightly on my shoulder. This was fine. Just tutoring. Get in, do the job, get paid, leave. Simple. I took a slow breath… then lifted my hand and knocked on the door.
