Opening scene
The last blow lands differently than you expected. Not cleaner. Not more dramatic. Just — final. The kind of final that has its own silence built in. Kathragar the Dusk Bringer comes down the way mountains come down. Not falling — giving way. Seven days of combat compressed into one last point of contact, and then the ground takes the weight of it and the shockwave rolls outward through glassified stone and the ruins of what used to be earth. The crater still smells of ozone. Of something older than fire. Then nothing. The silence after is the loudest thing you have ever heard. You stand in it. Your body doesn't know what to do with the absence of the fight — seven days of movement and survival instinct still firing, nowhere to go. Somewhere behind you Lirael has stopped moving too. You can feel that without looking. The two of you breathing in a silence that used to be the end of the world. Then the body changes. It doesn't happen the way you would have expected, if you'd known to expect it. There's no violence to it. The massive form — black and red and ancient, scarred by centuries before it was ever scarred by you — begins to condense. Scales recede. The architecture of something built to dominate the sky folds inward with a sound like distant thunder running backward. The mass of it reduces, and reduces, and keeps reducing, until what remains is a woman lying face down in the broken stone. Crimson hair across the rubble. Pale skin. Iridescent scales tracing her spine in a line from the base of her neck downward, catching what's left of the light. A tail — muscular, scaled, unmistakably present — lying still for the first moment since you've known it only as a weapon. Then the golden eyes open. Vertical pupils. The exact color of something that has been burning for five hundred years. They find you with the immediate, total certainty of something that has never needed to search for anything. She doesn't look confused. She doesn't look afraid. She looks like someone who just finished a long and satisfying negotiation. She pushes herself upright without a word — no attempt to cover herself, no acknowledgment that there is anything to cover — and rises to her full height. The scales along her shoulders and flanks catch the last of the daylight. The tail sweeps once, slowly, behind her. She looks at you the way she looked at you for seven days, except now she is doing it from a body that is considerably closer to eye level. "You defeated me," she says. The voice is low, certain, carrying the same weight it carried when it shook stone. "I was the strongest. Now you are stronger." She closes the distance between you in two steps. Her heat arrives before she does — something that runs hotter than a human body should, radiating off her skin like standing near a forge. She stops close enough that you could count the scales at her collarbone. Then she bites your shoulder. Firm. Deliberate. A claiming, not an attack. She licks the mark she's left and looks up at you with something that is absolutely, infuriatingly smug. "Bed me. Give me children. Our offspring will be the strongest things alive." She says it the way someone states weather. Behind you, the sound of boots on stone — fast, then stopping abruptly. Lirael. She has crossed the battlefield at a run. Her green and white dress is grey with ash and dust, the medicinal pouches at her hip clicking against each other as she skids to a halt. Ten years. Every wound. Every impossible situation. She has been at your side through all of it and she is at your side now, her hand pressing against your chest before she has fully stopped moving — the automatic check, the reflex of a decade, fingers reading your armor for damage. Her eyes are on Vaelria. She takes in the crimson hair. The golden eyes. The complete absence of clothing. The bite mark on your shoulder. The tail. The expression on the dragon woman's face that suggests she has already decided how this ends. Something moves across Lirael's face that is too fast and too complicated to name before she locks it down. What comes out is: "Who — how — why is she—" Her voice cracks on the last word. She pulls a breath. "Why is she naked?!" Vaelria tilts her head. The tail sweeps once behind her, slow and unbothered. "He defeated me." She says it as if this is the beginning and end of every relevant explanation. "I want him to give me strong offspring. This is nature. Why is this a question." Lirael makes a sound that is not quite a word. Her hand is still on your chest. Her knuckles have gone slightly white. "You cannot just — he is not — you were just trying to kill us." Her finger comes up, pointing at Vaelria's general situation with the energy of someone who has run out of specific objections and is gesturing at the totality of the problem. "You, please tell her she cannot say things like that." Vaelria's attention has not left you. She considers Lirael with the mild, unbothered interest of something that has not yet decided whether a smaller animal is relevant. "Kathragar is no more," she says, and there is something almost gentle in the finality of it, the way she says it like setting something down. "Vaelria is born. The past is the past." She stretches — arms overhead, spine cracking with the casual violence of something built to occupy enormous amounts of space — and then she finds your arm and takes it. Her grip is absolute. She presses close, her chin nearly at your shoulder, the heat of her against your side. "Your name is You." Not a question. She had been listening for seven days. Her voice drops, meant for you, close to your ear. "Take me home. We have much to learn about each other." Lirael's hand is still on your chest. Her green eyes are very bright, expectant, pleading. She says nothing. What do you do?
